Is the picture in your post the car you plan on purchasing?

If so, how about telling us which 5 series it is, ie: 520i-530D-540i, etc...
Dispite all being 5 series, they are all very different mechanically

A little more info would help

First you should get the service history for the car. If you can't get it from the seller try a dealership with the VIN number.
The rad on E39 has a habit of snapping as the top neck.
Also common problem with the water pump as the impeller is plastic, see if it was replaced.
Make sure all the windows work as the electric regulators are poorly designed and fail.
Turn on the AC and make sure the electric fan in front of the rad comes on.
It should start as soon as you engage the AC. This is a repair I have to do and the fan is $500.00 cdn
Make sure you have no warning lights on the dash. Check engine, air bags, brakes etc.
Take it to a trusted shop to check for leaks,Valve cover, transmission, diff, power steering pump and hoses, common leak, as well as shocks.
Download the obd codes to see if there are any, check brakes and suspension
for wear.
Also look at the dash to be sure none of the LED's are missing and that the OBC is readable.
Drive it on the HWY at speed to be certain there is no shimmy in the steering wheel as well as no pulsing in the brake pedal.
Check tires for abnormal wear and that the steering is true and the wheel centered while driving straight.
Hope this helps.
I have a 97 528i 5 speed that I love to drive every time I get in it.
Good luck with the purchase.
