Welcome abord *wave* I own a 318is and I regret not buying a 325is....The reason why I bought a 318 was for insurance it's cheaper then a 325 or 328....

The problems....I always look for

Make sure AC works
Moonroof that tilts
Head Gasket (was it changed)
Rust
Wear and Tear
Accidents?

I actually brought mine to my buddy who is a mechanic, and he checked everything, Exhaust, balljoints, lines...etc....

Just the normal stuff, I don't really think there's anything too notorius about them, just the head gasket.

I bought mine 3 years ago at 221,000km.....

1st year
changed plugs
needed rack and pinion. ($600 lifetime warranty installed)
block heater fell apart????(That was close to $100)

2nd year
Tires($600)

3rd year
Brakes ($600)

Now I need a Body job..that's $1800...

That is what was needed plus all the oil changes.....Summer only car btw. I'm at 257,000km now.

I hope this helps you a bit, but like I said try and vear towards a 6cyl you will not regret it...

the biggest think you should be concerned with is the year, E36 before 94 suffer from a weak rear subframe. The subframe tears off the body after years of wear. I seen it happen.

and yes, 318's are not much cheaper than 325, u might as well go for a 325.

as they all said above plus the usual stuff, keep an eye out on the hoses for leaks. when i was looking to buy i believe i read that was a fault, as well as the water pump if its never been replaced, get one with a metal impellar. have the suspension looked over, lower control arm bushings tend to go ball joints etc... its not always the case, but they are common. Just keep your eyes open and dont buy the first one you see. Look at a few and compare. and i also recomend a 325-328. dont get me wrong a 318 is still a sweet ride but the extra power of the 6 is just an instant smile bringer

good luck *th-up*

Well I just bought a '95 318....and I admit I am a bit sorry I didn't find a 325 for sale. That 4 banger tries hard but sometime just doesn't cut it. Oh well a tank of gas takes me about 650 km...can't bitch about that :)

Well from what everyone is sayin I'll definetly aim for a 325is or a 328is with the six cyclinder. Other then that im definetly going to check out a few I saw one for sale 318is in Surrey Bc its a 92 but not in the best shape interior wise and no sunroof hes asking 12,500 which i belive is a rip off but definetly going to keep my eyes open for a 325 thanks guys for all the help appreciate that *wiggle*

Gamite you might want to re-research that... it nots false other then:
it is ALL e36's that are prone 92-99+ for the Trailing arms ripping out of the weak/weakened mounts behind the drivers seat..
E46 too!! ....check roundel the editor Dissed all new models as un-track worthy!

I love one... IF my car didn't have 169000 k on it...and it didn't need front struts. and 4 steelies for winter tires and new front discs etc etc.

The 4 banger is a little gutless now that I'm used to it...but I get 650 km to a tank...not bad for an engne that needs a tuneup.

listen man i just bought a 328I, a 1998 for 9500. It needs about 950 bucks worth of parts + labour and then it'll be prime. go for the 6cyl, go for 94 or newer, go black, make sure the bearings are good (50% of the 950 ima spending), rust everywhere, (especially trunk for some reason) make sure the clutch is good and not too worn. Personally i wouldn't buy a car with more than 200K on it.

A 318i is a little on the slow side, but it really depends what you are looking for.

I am young, and I dont need a fast car or insurance. So I supercharged my 318 and now its a little faster than a 328 I would say. You know what they say, its more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow :P Not to mention I save a lot on gas.

E36 Common Faults FAQ (http://www.unitedbimmer.com/forums/thread3824.html)
That is a pretty good resource for things to look at when considering buying an e36. :)

I bought a 4 banger on purpose.... I have lttle control over myself and a limited wallet.
However never have a problem keeping up to 6 cly or Ford V8's for that matter on twisties.....I myself like the same handeling of any model E36 including M3, maintenace of the 4 banger & gas milage. Not to menton with a 3:91 diff, you put most 6 bangers to shame till you hit 190 KPH.

id do what nascar318is said and id also check the water pump and impellar...thats a major thing to check for.
