Hey guys, just yesterday my motor has been running like shit, so i did a compression test on it, and came to tthe conclusion that my piston rings are done. The cars got 317km on it, and shes been good to me, but i think it might be time for a new heart!

I was thinkin since i already have a M50 in my car to swap a M52 motor in my car, that way i can use my manifold on the M52 and get some gains from that. Since i've already located a couple of M52 engines (the M50's are tougher than i though) how hard would it be to swap into an OBD I vehicle? I know the intake manifold needs to be changed, but what about the computer, can i use the 325i computer or does it need a new/custom ECU?!

ANy help would be appreciated!

Which motor have you got? and M50 or M50tu? (m50tu has VANOS)

You could consider dropping in a 3.2l M3 motor. Mike at Munich Motors has done many of those swaps. It's easiest if you currently have the M50tu as then you can use your current harness and DME, with new software.

You can also use the M52 motor, again it's easiest if you currently have an M50tu.

I didn't think a good M50 would be hard to find, but then I haven't looked for one. Try Thorold Imports, or Munich Motors.

Thanks Mark, you got the number for those 2 places? I found a couple of regular M50's (non-TU's) and for the price they gave me, i can get a m52 for the same price! Also, i have a M50 tu, sorry i wasn't specific in the first post! I would LOVE to get my hands on a 3.2L but my current financial situation puts a stop to that dream quick. Also, i'm going to be performing the instal/swap myself as i haev all the required tools in my garage.

So if i throw in a M/S 52 motor i can use all of the harness and other various things from my M50? In regards to this chip, where can i get my hands on this? Does it have to be a custom chip? Or can i use the one in my car currently (i have a turner chip for my car, and when i was scanning my car a while ago, with a SNAP-ON code reader, it said that i had a M chip in my car.)

Thanks again

For the best price/performance gain. My suggestion would be a non-TU M52 B28 (2.8L single vanos). Then put M3 cams and M50 manifold. With a nice cat back exhaust, CAI and software (MarkD) you'll be putting down around 210 RWHp. Basically at the same level as an S52 Stock motor. You can probably get all this for around $3,500-4,000.00 plus labour for installation.

Thanks jazz. Thats what i'm going for, i'm gonna try to grab a 328 motor (M52) but i'm not looking to spend that much money. I'd rather just get a S52 motor which i've found in the 4g range!!

I just want to know what would be required when swapping the M52 in my car asides the M50 manifold!

Mike at Munich can be reached at 416-665-1605. I think he will supply and install a 1997/1998 3.2 for close to the price you mentioned.

You need a new chip. I have developed one for that conversion.

I'll have to check again then, I thought it was a bit lower. Best thing to do is ask Mike.

Guys, thanks so much for all your help, i'm going to give mike a call toda and see what he can do for me. And since i'll most likely do the swap for the 328 we'll be keeping in touch mark!

why not just rebuild your 325?

The amount of time it AND money that it will take to basically pull the motor out and rebuild everything i'll probably be better off just getting another motor.

BESIDES... i like power!
