What's the stock exhaust piping size on '99 540? I need a new cat and I wanna get Magnaflows but I'm not sure what the size is, 2 1/4" or 2 1/2"?
I think it's 2 1/4"...
Anyone?!

First of all, don't forget that your Catalytic Converters are covered under an 8 year/140,000 km Federal Emissions Warranty, your BMW dealer is responsible for replacing your cats free of charge within that warranty period. They may need to perform a back pressure test to verify a failed cat (see below).

If you are considering aftermarket CATs you'll need 2.25" in/out, no air, round body, High Flow CATs. I can confirm that this size will fit:

If you are considering Magna-Flow converters, get the Carsounds, they are identical, except for the polished case and are less expensive. Carsound makes Magna-Flow.

I just measured the outside diameter of the pipe that leads to the cats, it's measuring at 2.5 inch

Nope, here as well. I had mine changed at 120,000Km. They don't advertise it but they know it exists. Tell them you would like to have your cats changed under the federal emission warranty.

That would mean a 2.25" pipe. I believe they are measured inside.

Nope. Not a penny from your pocket.
