My 97 M3 makes banging clanging and clunking noises when driving over rough streets, yet all the parts supposedly check out good, nothing worn or loose? Anybody experience this? Any ideas?

is the noise coming from the front or back?
left or right?
only when turning? all the time?
potholes or bumps?
describe the noise? .. is it like a metal on metal thud?

Maybe it's the coffee can of bolts in the trunk?

Seriously though - can you isolate the sound? Mine was the rear control arm bushing.. went blooey and everything i hit a bump it sounded like the old' clunking sound.

Who said all the parts are good? Did you take it to a shop? One that is familiar with BMW antics/issues? Really, you have to be more specific with your descriptions as Justin above pointed out.

I too have a noise. I have isolated it to be in the REAR of the car, and it makes kind of a big sort of "clunking" noise (I don't really know how to explain it) ONLY when I go over sharp bumps........I just did bilstein shocks all around and heavy duty RSM's from turner motorsports. Any ideas?

98323iS.... check your rear control arm bushings. Mine sounded the same.

Charlie replaced one side in like an hour. I have to re-do the other side now.

I found one of the noises today. Actually, Bruno Lafosse from Racing King did. You see, what I figured out was when a mechanic looked at the car, he put it on a hoist and the suspension dropped down, and the parts were all in a different place. Bruno drove it up on ramps and crawled underneath and found it was the stabilizer links. When the car was on a hoist there was too much pressure on the links for them to move. Funny how a couple of backyard guys figured out it in 5 minutes but two different BMW specialists didn't. I'm not going to mention them because they are both excellent technicians. I guess they simply wern't that motivated.
