View Full Version : My Car is Jerking!!!

So I went to NYC for the weekend in my 2001 Ford Focus and man did I have problems with my car!

About half way there i got off an exit to get some coffee and my car started struggling as if it was low on gas. I had about 1/8 of a tank left and the gas light wasn't on either. I accelerated and i got nothing. Luckily there was a gas station on the corner and i just made it far enough to pull in and my car stalled! I thought the engine had seized at this point (happened with my windstar) but luckily it didn't! I opened the hood and filled up gas, started it up and everything was fine!!

On the way back, it did it again! And, i noticed the there was 1/8 of a tank left! I drive my car all the time right to E and this has never happened ??? what can this be from? Keep in my mind it was 30 degrees plus and i had been driving for hours so i was thinking the car may have overheated but my temp. gauge was fine?????

Towards the end of my drive my car started Jerking. I had to accelrate very very lightly otherwise my car would jerk. The pickup on my car was terrible and it would jerk more on uphills. There wasn't any particular speed it jerking at, it would do it when i accelerated. The only way i was able to avoid it was if I acceelerated very lightly :S

Any input on this guys? I wanna have some sort of idea as to what's happening with my car before i take it in to have it checked out by me mechanic.

I would say it's happening because it's a Ford. End of story.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark here......

Possiblility of the fuel level sender/sensor could be wrong and your actually running out of gas?

Yeah, that's explains why it would have seized twice but I'm more concerend with the jerking. I coudlnt pass cars if my life depended on it! I had to accelerate ever so lightly that going from 120-130 would take 15 seconds or so. If I accelerate any harder it jerks. On uphills it does it no matter how hard I accelerate.

could be so many things. i've seen many fuel pumps die on the older focus'. might be on it's way out. maybe your car didn't like the american gas :D

your fuel level sensor could be wrong. 1/8 gas left could mean empty.

fuel pump could be clogged, or possibly debris in your gas tank.

vaccuum leak under the hood.

ECU could be on its way out.

If you always run your car to Empty it puts additional strain on the fuel pump. The less fuel in the tank the more the pump runs. Honda's are notorious for this when they get older and your under a 1/4 tank of gas the struggle eventually burning out the pump. Other things that put additional strains on the pump or can give you the symptoms you are describing are the gas cap not sealing, clogged fuel filter and dirty injectors.

the odd thing is now, it's not showing those symptoms anymore. it still jerks but in order for it to jerk i really gotta press the gas whereas before it was doing it with minimum pressure to the accelarator.

I'm guessing it's the fuel pump as well

Was it raining when it was doing this? If your wires are bad, the moisture could case your car to misfire which would cause the car to jerk or stumble.

When was the last time you did plugs and wires?

It wasn't really raining, but it was spitting. The days was also pretty humid. I never really had the plugs and wires checked on my car. I've only had it since Jan (112 k) and now it's got about 130k

We use to own a ford escort wagon and when ever it was raining or even humid outside the car would putter just like how you describe. We changed the spark plugs and wires, never had the problem again.
