hey guys ill be driving my car and for a few days nothing..then all of a sudden ill get the check control light coming on.. and then center comp display saying BREAK LIGHT CIRCUIT...CHECK OWNERS MANUAL.. i have replaced the rear window break light since it was burnt out...the strange thing is it turns on the odd time not everday..1998 323is..what do i need to do to get this away..

brake light switch is messed up ... most all E36s will give you that error with OBD2 ... switch is about 10 USD ... it needs replacement

also check your brake light bulbs/holder to make sure they are secure. sometimes if they are loose or the pins are broken, it wont make solid contact and therefore it will give you a warning. it happened to me, and i changed the light bulb holder(not sure of the proper name) and never got the brake light circuit failure again.

Hey, just to let you know, I had the same issue, and there was a post about it a little while ago. There is a switch that is attached to your break pedal. That switch is most likely causing the fault code, and it is a cheap fix as I did it myself to my car. It cost about $30 from the stealer, and you can just replace it yourself. I thought that it was my brake lights as well, but it is just the switch. Replace it and you will be fine.
