Been doing research and i'm finding out that the 540's are gas guzzlers. I can't seem to find a straight forward answer as to how much mileage u get out of one of these things and all i'm getting is conflicting numbers :S.
Correct me if i'm wrong, the 540's have a 72 litre tank right?

So a question for all of you 540 (e39) drivers out there.

How much gas are you guys consuming on city and high????
Thanks

I drive mostly city, maybe around 30-40% is hwy, I get about 500km a tank, but I have a somewhat heavy right foot, I just came back from a weekend up north, all hwy driving I got about 650km a tank

same as Quack's...

mix of city/hwy not too soft-not too hard driving i hit 500km mark all the time...
never took it on the straight hwy drive but i'm pretty sure it would be 600-650km, around there; usually sits at 12.5-13.0L/100km (or around 22-23MPG for all you yankees) :D

Not a 540i but my 97 528i averages 9.1L/100k combined driving. I get a little under 700kms on a tank of 91 fuel. 1000kms/tank all highway.

Me too, a little over 500km combined driving. I got 8.2 L per 100 Kph once driving about 85 on cruise over a distance of about 200kms. Then all you have to do is goose it a few times once you arrive and you've lost all that good milage. :)

Full tank is 72L, but I believe 5 is reserve. I once drove until the range was ---- and it still only took 69L.

Sunoco 94 cost anywhere between $55-75 a tank *shiner*

Unless you've chipped your 540, the M62 only req's 89 AKI gas. No point in putting in 94 octane, it won't increase performance and it costs an arm and a leg.

For ottawa folks, go to Macewen's. They sell their ethenol blend of 89AKI for regular price, and 2 cents cheaper on wednesdays!

I had MarkD flash my ECU so I need the high octane, but gas in Canada sucks so I always put the highest octane

I use to fill up about 6 times a month, but I moved out of Markham last year to be closer to work, now I'm down to 3 a month, I don't complain about gas, I don't car if it's 75.5 or 95.5 I'll still fill it up, I bought nothing but V8's in the past I don't think gas is on my mind :D

I drive 80% highway and 20% city - my average is 11 L/100km .
I am quite heavy footed too.

I dono about you guys but if I put 89 in my tank - after 3 tanks of it my car becomes quite sluggish. I have to put 91 to fix the performance. I do not see a lot of difference between 91 and 94 performace-wise but it costs less then a dollar to have 94 instead of 91 for a full tank, so often I opt out for 94 when it is available. BTW I also noticed that gas/milage worsens if I use 89.

But gas milage depends on the driving style as well as what gears you are using.
If I am driving arround and I am in a good mood I keep the RPMs high, 2nd gear or maximum 3rd in the city. That way I can burn 20 L/100 easy :)

according to my car comp it reads about 14.4L/100km & I always use, a lot of you guys are getting way better mileage than me, I know I got some EVAP problems maybe that is the cause

Why would anyone consider putting 89 in an M62 is beyond me....

Oh yeah? It musn't be hard to get beyond you then since it says 89AKI on the gas cap. :D

Did you mean 87?

I remember when I went through some bad times when I had to put the suggested by BMW 89 in .... I hated my car's performance ...

I wondered that myself, it says 89 on the gas cap but most guys frown on anything less than 91  It not like you NEED 91 like in the M3 or anthign cuz it says 89!

When I had my 540, I averaged 22 mpg in mixed city/hwy driving.
When I changed the rear diff to the 3.15, it dropped to 21 mpg.

My current M5 is averaging 18-19 mpg.

I did a track event at Mosport 2 weeks ago and averaged 8 mpg!!
