they both have V8s, they both have that engine recall issue (shouldn't be a big deal w/ how old they are now). I see way more 530i's w/ manual transmissions at a lower cost compared to 540i's w/ manual transmissions. How are these two cars so different yet so similar? is there any obvious difference in reliability? I am just trying to look for the E34 that makes the most sense to buy (yes i know, The 535i is one of the best buys, but they are less abundant and are getting older).
iF you want realiable car and not to lazy I think last year 1995 525i with manual tranny would be very reliable. If you want the beaat ,then you go with 6peed manual E34 540i. I just dont know if 530 is more reliable then 525....I hope somene can add in.

Well, if you plan to buy a 530i E34 check the engine...
Mine was a factory replace and has a 4.0L V8.

The 540i has way more power than the 530i. The 530i is a good highway cruiser.
Both V8 have the same problem: nikasil and they are both expensive maintenance wise.
The 535i off course is the best of the E34 after the M5.
Personnaly I am looking for another E34 535i 5 speed and I will add a mild cam or a mild turbo to one of the engines sitting in my garage.

I would definately go with the 540 if you had the choice of the two. Just of course, make sure you do the leak down test before you buy. With the 540's you have the option of moving up to the 4.4, and you also have the option of the 6spd transmission that comes with it. Just a thought for future consideration.
