In the next couple of weeks or months, I'd like to put together an E36 exhaust shootout video. I know its been done by the European Car Magazine, but my comparison will be held outside in the same location.

I'm doing this because from all the exhaust videos I've seen, it's hard to determine the actual sound since everyone's camera has a different microphone setup, frequency range, or the audio quality was poorly recorded; therefore my project will give a good relative comparison of the exhaust systems out there. I will for sure need someone with a stock exhaust setup as the baseline.

I will need the following information for those interested in helping me out with this project:
Location: e.g. Toronto, Mississauga, Barrie, etc.
Model: e.g. 318/320/325/328/M3
Type of Exhaust System:

Location will be determined later and I will have planned out exactly how it will be conducted. Your time and patience will be appreciated.

I'm in as long as I get the car back together by the date that you will do your tests.

perhaps if you wanted to be very specific able the decible levels and pitch of the exhausts.... you may want to split up the categories even further.

What I mean by that is for example... I sold my stock M3 exhaust to Armando (sillye36) and it sounds way different on his car 328is, than it did on my M3 when I had it. Therefore, splitting up 328's in 1 category makes somewhat sense since inline 6 2.9L engines seem to elicit a different pitch than inline 3.2L engines.

Also, when I installed my M50 manifold, engine pitch sounded deeper and grunty and effected the exhaust (AA) mine was louder with the M50 and when I switched back to the S52 manifold, the exhaust noise tapered and smoothed out.

Also, it may be different to test the same exhaust on a 95 3.0L M3 with the M50 manifold than the OBD2 M3's 3.2L with the S52 manifold.

This is just my opinion but I have tried a couple exhausts and am very meticoulous to sound and stuff. Even an intake coupled with an exhaust sounds a little different.

Also, to add to ^^^, exhausts also tend to sound lower the older they get. I know my Racing Dynamics is a louder then when I first got the car, especially at idle.

Hey Gavin,
Your suggestion makes sense, I do notice a slight difference between the M's and non-M's. Actually, I know that if anyone has a Euro Spec M3, the engine and exhaust sounds a lot different than the US Spec, especially Bimmersport's Euro M3. To your last point, I don't quite notice a difference of an intake coupled with an exhaust. Perhaps it's the combination of the louder intake and exhaust that gives us the perception it sound a lot different. I've got a good ear too and can filter out the intake noise from the exhaust; I'm not doubting you, but it's just a thought :D

For the time being, I'll keep the categories splitted to N/A and FI. If I get enough M's and non-M's then we shall open up the subcategories; in otherwords, help me get the word out

Anyways I'm still trying to find a location that's somewhat in the centre for everyone. For sure it will be somewhere in Toronto, however when the time comes, I will PM each of you the location. If you have suggestions for a good quiet and secluded area, PM me your ideas.

Hopefully I can get this done all at once, but if the group is too big, I'll have to split the shootings twice or maybe get the second group to show up a bit later.

is the plan just to have the sound recorded from outside of the car??? when u drive by or whatever.

my main reason why i haven't bought an exhaust is i dunno how it sounds from the inside, and the anyoing humming noise would drive me insane if i'd have to listen to that while driving all the time.

like maybe one shot of just cruising on the highway around 100-140 and maybe just flooring/redlining it on the highway

Hey Alan,

The plan is to do a series of recordings from inside and outside. I will come up with the finalized plan after my exam, but tentiavely it will include, startup + reving, accelerating away, drive-by, fly-by, in-car normal driving, and possibly a highway scene. There will be a certain way that everyone will have to rev their car or do the driveby, so the comparison is as close as possible.

But again, this video is a relative comparison and won't give an accurate result since the loud/deepness may be slightly different in person and also cause everyone has their own subjective opinion as to what's too loud, what sounds good, or what's too quiet.
