I just purchased a 1997 540I 6 speed with 79000km, fully loaded black in colour. This things actually moves especially on the highway. Never thought I would own a 4 door vehicle.
PS I'm still keeping the M3

Good point, and then drop the 540 into the M3 and the M3 in to hmmm, make a gocart. However I think my wife might not approve.

Biggest difference you will feel is if you get a 3:15 diff
other than that, software, cai, etc.

See MarkD for software, apparently the M62 guys love it.
Still, an intake/exhaust on that big motor sounds absolutely insane.

Nice car. Probably the perfect all-around family sport-sedan out there. Plenty quick too - stock! My 328i can't keep up with them at all! Been proven twice now....and I did everything right. They're just Beasts! In my opinion, just a notch below an M5.
What colour? Any pics?

I'm not sure what the numbers are for the gains, but you can definitely tell a difference especially on the hwy, I'm not sure what he is charging for the flash but you can PM MarkD for all the info

Another note of interest... just looking at my E39 catalog I noticed that the 520 came with a 3.63:1 diff... now that would be awesome on the 540!!!

Shorter gears will deliver more torque...but also means shifting gears sooner. I raced my buddy's 850 with 3:15s (I think) swapped in. From a standstill, he pulls me, but I gain 2 car lengths on every gear change. I pass him at 90kph while he's switching to third. By the time I'm in third, I'm gone.

You certain 2 car lenghts, that seems to be pretty high for every shift, I could see 4 or 5 feet even then that's kind of high.

Beautiful ride! love the RS rims...one of my personal favourites for that car...and most Bimmers actually.
Looking very very clean....Where did you find such a clean 540 with that low miles?

I have been looking for over a year for this vehicle, calling and searching. This car was found in Hamilton by luck. The price was a little bit too high for a 1997, however the condition "like new" justified it.
Eh thanks man for info. I appreaciate........ *th-up* Good luck with your 540i!

Here's a post I wrote about it when the race was fresh in my mind. It says "almost" 2 car lengths.
