Hey people,

I've been searching for this and have found numerous answers but which one is the right one...
How often am I supposed to change oil on my 540i???
5000km? 10000km? 3 months? 6 months? every 5 days?

Appreciate the answers...even the smarta$$ ones... :D

it also depends how you drive the car.. if you drive like a maniac all the time then the lights will go away pretty quick.. it should be on the user manual :D

Changed my oil just before winter mid November, down to one green light.
It works and it's what I go by.

most cars its every 3 months or 5000km.
At work I always go by that and mark it down on the sticker i put in the customers car.

But some newer cars claim 10k or so. I'd do an oil with reg oil every 5k or put in good oil and go 10k.

The key is changing ur oil regularly, thats more important than what kinda oil u use.

If you follow the meter, it can take over 20,000km. Personally, I don't trust it, esp for my hi mileage 540, so I've been changing every 8K. I'm thinking of going to 10K to save some dough. After all, there is 8 litres of synthetic, which is double most cars, Plus the filter looks like it came off a Mac Truck.

If you change it at home, try driving up onto a couple of 2x4s for the front wheels. This will give you enough clearance to reach the drain plug laying on the floor, or creeper. If you want to jack it up, most jacks won't fit anyway without the 2x4s because the car is too low.

You'll need a stubby Phillips screwdriver to open the "access door", and a 17mm socket, or 6mm(?) Allen key for the plug. A big size oil filter strap wrench works well on the filter cover if you don't have the socket.

On an E39, there is a inspection and service "meter". The green lights are the bars shown in the meter.

Yup thats it, used to be sears auto center.

Yes the service light is easy to clear, we can do it with a $10k snap-on diagnostics computer, or a $0.10 peice of speaker wire (shhh).

As for charge, it depends. I donno if ur car takes a special oil filter or not.

Regular prices are:
10W30 Esso Bulk oil $15.95
+$5 for 5W30 Castrol bulk oil (+$5 for bottle oil)
and syntec even more $$ forgot exactly.

Theres a $3 disposal fee + taxes.
the regular oil change usualy comes to $21 with tax and everything which is pretty cheap
