I'm considering purchasing an E39 if the price is right but I need some help!!

The e36 throughout its years looked exactly the same year after year. There maybe minor differences but the overall body was pretty much the same.

From what I can see, that's not the case with the E39. The chasis is the same but what about the body itself, was there any changes to it throughout the years? The newer ones look so much more better but i cant seem to figure out what it is that makes it appear that way :S.

What changes has BMW made to the body of the E39 throughout the years and why is it that the newwer ones (2002, 2003) look so much better? Which year exactly did they make these changes to the body (if any)?

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

no changes to the body ...
but in 2001 e39 got new head lights (refered to as AE or Angel Eyes), new tail lights, clear side blinkers, body colored moldings, front bumper.

if there was something else in the appearance that has changed it was minimal.

in 2000 540 got Vanos
in late 2000 CD was standard not cassette

the biggest noticable difference is the Angel Eyes and the second one is the tail lights. they changes teh appearance dramaticaly.

that's all I remember - there probably was something else but these are the main ones

ahhhh i see. that's a lot of differences lol, i mean it it's a lot of minor upgrades but it makes the car look so much better. So 2001 was the year BMW really made the "major" changes to the e39, correct?

BTW what are vanos again. Heard it before, but can't put my finger on it lol, thanks

I had a 2000 540i/6 and it had true Msport pkg w/body color side molding. The difference between 2000 and 2001 MY's are the headlights, taillights, and sidemarkers.

It was an AWESOME car.

If it is within your means, get yourself into an E39 M5 - you won't regret it.

Good luck!

The most dramatic change you can see is between the sport suspension and standard.
With the sport the car is lowered at least 1.5 inches. This closes the gap which makes the car look like a jetta.
What I did to my '87 528i, I dropped it 2 inches, now the car looks superb!

outta curiosity does the Vanos work like Vtec?....does it "scream" when it's opening up the valves or w/e?

i beleive in 2002 the sport pack was now called the M package which made it look like an M5 front bumber and back bumper, 2001 it was just sports pack,....
