Check engine light after oil change?

I just finished changing my oil with synthetic 5W30 oil and new filter. I just picked up the car and the oil was very thick and black. Anyone know why the check engine light would come on, and or how to get the code from the car without going to the dealer. It's a 1999 328I e46. Please help.

The oil change if done properly has nothing to do with a MIL light. The MIL is related to the emissions system, get her scanned for fault codes.
