View Full Version : common replace parts on a E39?

I've done some research on E39s, but I got some questions.

since all the ones I'm looking at all between 80-120k km on the odometer, I know mileage means little when comes to the condition of the car, but what about common replace parts on a E39? what can I expect to be broken on those cars soon after purchase? I seen many with broken cup holder, but I guess its ok, and I also notice the dots missing on the displays.

what about bushings? suspension parts? any interior parts I should be prepare to save up and spend money on?

Generally speaking around 100K almost every car goes through a "full rebuild" stage.

The suspension/bushings/tie rods will begin to get worn, shocks aswell. This is when cars go through their first (or second, if it's one of a select few types of cars) major rebuild stage. This is when many parts are worn to the point of replacement, suspension, steering and some engine components are included in this.

Sorry I cannot be of more specific help :(

which model E39 are you referring to, if it's the 540 I can give you a small list of things

also what would you choose, a newer car w/higher mileage or an older with less mileage.

If it's an E39...

Older, less milage... But that's in alberta, I don't know how fast cars rust out east... But I'd presume pretty quick considering there's 98s and crap in for sale that say they have minor rusting problems...

ok, how about this one, I saw this 97 528I today, private , the car doesn't see winter and the undercarriage looks mint, exhaust isn't even rusted, however it has 132k km on it, BUT the price is more than fair, as the gentleman said he bought it for his daughter but she doesn't drive since she lives in downtown now. Unsurprisingly, the cup holders are broken, but the display aren't missing any dots, so I was really surprise. The engine runs smooth and all, but just its a 97 and its 132k km. What you guys think?

should be alright if he kept up with maintenance, my 98 540 has 169,000km on it the only rust I got is from stone chips on my right fender

this one I found zero rust, but typical stone chips on the hood.

compare to others I can save some money, going to lower the car anyways as soon I get it. and more to check out before I make my decision.

btw, is your car lowered?

I'm not final yet, I still got to see at least several more before I can even decide to either wait for longer or now.

damn sport suspension, those rims look so damn good.
