you can probally pick up a 99 540i for 25k & it has the steptronic tranny the 98 didn't have, the 540 is a great choice, my previous car was a Lexus LS400 which was a great car, but sometimes you want something that has more balls & handles better the 540 was the only choice

For $25,000 well, if you're going with automatic anyway, you could get a 2000 740i. It was close to the end of production of the e38 bodystyle, so it looks a bit outdated and these guys might take an even bigger plunge in deprication when a newer 7-series comes out. If that doesn't concern you they are great looking cars.

A 540i is probably what I would choose as well though. You seriously can't go wrong with one and it's borrowed lots of luxury features from the bigger 7-series brother.

Maybe a 325iT would be for you? (These were introduced in 2002). You would save tons on gas an insurance, while having a much newer car which arguably depricate the least of all 3-series.

well i like all the imput so far but if i was to go 3 series it would definately be 330ci M package but since i dont have that coin i'd much rather a 540
i like the 7 series bmw BUT my issue with them is soo large and so heavy
i like the 540 casuse it gives me sport when i need it and enormous luxury...COME ON HEATED STEERING WHEEL *bonus*

steptronic is automatic with a manual mode. you have the ability to have a full automatic car and when u want you can use the manual mode and hold the gears longer

So steptronic is like tiptronic?
i was kindda thinking it was a automatic/ manual mode when some sort of clutch pedal was used.

The E36 is good for that too, I have the same problem and just aim the vents at my hands! Hey it works wonders and the vents are right next to the steering wheel!

oh is that what that is....same thing with me....my hands are always cold..my ex used to make fun of me saying i was iceman from tha batman movie since it would be like 30 degrees outside and my hands would still be relatively cold...

meh i do same as bmw7...aim vents at my hands.....doesn't work well tho because the stupid leather wrapped steering in the civic is ALWAYS cold...unless it's been in direct sunlight....in which case it's burning hot

Go for a sport package. It lowers the car a bit, and you get 17" wheels. The 540 is a lot of fun. Even the automatics have tons of balls!

The heated steering wheel is awesome! It's hot way before any vents are putting out heat.
