Hey guys,

I have a problem with my newly purchased '94 318i. My old '92 318i didn't have an amp, this new one does.

Here is the problem, I have a SONY cd head unit which I just got. The CD-player doesn't work on the car, only the radio. I mean there is no sound when the CD is playing, and there is sound on radio mode. The guy at the shop tested it and said the head unit is working properly, and it was. He said something about a blue wire hooked up to the amp that I have to connect? I'm not sure what to do exactly.. is there something I have to connect on the wiring harness? Or is there something I have to bypass or cut? The audio store guy says the SONY head unit has some security feature which prevents the CD audio from being heard when an amp or speaker is not connected (all speakers are working)...

im assuming that you had the proper adaptor for the new deck,, i think our cars need a certain adaptor to make things work (im not exactly sure what its called),, other than that, could you possibly run it by a car audio place for a quick look,, maybe even take it to where you got the deck from.. they may be able to help you out,, ill PM you if i think of anything else,

It took them THAT long for those mofo's to get that thing back to you and there was nothing wrong with it?!? Or is that the new one and its still not workin?

Is the blue wire a solid colour, or does it have a white stripe along the wire?

Blue wire w/white stripe is the "amp remote" turn on.

The blue wire is the "power antenna". Some head units "power antenna" connection power down when you switch functions from the radio to cd.

Get a "Metra" (brand name) wiring harness to wire the HU into your car it'll make things easier.

Hey guys, thanks for the help but I figured out the problem. I was at Charlie's house today working on it with him. The problem is that my SONY head unit has some odd protections and the original BMW amps cause lots of problems with SONY decks. I just bypassed the amp, rewired all the speakers back to the head unit, man it took a while. Anyways, now everything works just fine, the wiring was hard to figure out though.
