if you are planning on getting the 6spd you might run into clutch problems, on the earlier models the oil seperator clogs up causing severe oil burning, there are some more but can't think right now, I'll get back to you later

oil seperator clogs up causing severe oil burning pretty much the main one ... in my case caused cats to fail ... needed replacement.

might run into clutch problems Yep! Had that replaced.

Cup holders break all the time ... not really a problem, but gets very annoying

my cats failed as well, but that's not a E39 problem, happens to lots of cars

are you planning on trading in your 3 for a 5? if you are planning on doing crazy engine mods than buying a earlier model would be better, but if not than look for a 2002 or 2003 you can afford that

My uncles friend had a 540i auto, which wouldn't go into reverse. It was at our shop for about a week.....I had the pleasure of driving it in and out of the shop everyday.

I dont think its a common problem thou

I had trouble with a grinding gears, essentially got a whole new tranny under warranty
also I had troubles with my trunk not closing and my sunroof staying open

other than that prety trouble free at 47km
But a common problem is the radiator? failure

Replaced the back ones with the storage unit. More functional IMO.

For me the random pixels missing in the instrument cluster was the problem.

Rad is still original on my '99 w/ 121,000 km.

My upper rad hose appears to be modified vs. earlier designs I have seen.

Do some research on the engine designation pre '99 and post M62tu (techincally updated).

Price isn't that big of a concern, i can go and buy a M5 but i want something reliable and my driving record isn't spotless so i can't do something stupid thats why i have to stick with something in the 540i, there is really no point in buy something really flashy and then paying what the car is worth in insurance yearly. I will see what i can come up with, i think i'm pretty much mind set on the 540 now, just a matter of when i can sell mine. Thanks for the tips guys

it's a 98 528i with 140km on it and the guy wants $25k? he must be on crack, for $25k you can pick up a mint 99 540i with less mileage

Temperature sensors goes quit often.Might explain the blown rad hose.If the check engine comes every time to start the engine.get it looked after. My brothers blew on his 97 e39 528 the way back from the cottage.200 km tow. Good thing i have CAA PLUS.http://www.jnb.com/~winefam/ted2.jpg

Cam sensor failure is common, cheap to fix. Expect to get a new rad and cats. If you get the six speed, expect to wear your rear tires. :D
