Hey Hey,

In the midst of shopping for a three series. Torn between 98/99 328is and 2001 330ci. Need some advise from some knowledgeable people (this board seems to have many).

Obviously I could buy the 328is for less, and the 330ci has more power (on paper anyway). I've read all the stats, but I need info on things like build quality, reliability, handling, road feel and that incomparable x-factor that just makes you happy to drive the car.

Please weigh in with your opinions and facts about these topics so I can stop pulling my hair out.

Why yes I could. I was worried about the maintenance and repair costs though. How do they compare to the newer 330ci?

I really wanted an E36 M3. However, I couldn't find one with low mileage... I went with a 2001 330Ci (5 speed manual). I'm really happy with the car - it's quick and is beautiful inside and out. I've driven the E36 M3, and in terms of quickness it is very similar (240hp engine i believe?). The 330Ci, is a little scaled down version of the E36 M3's engine, but lacks the luxury, and sometimes has higher mileage. In the end, either car is awesome - but I'd still for an M3 even though I have a 330Ci.

E36's build quality isn't as good as a 330 but they do cost alot less and are still easy to maintain and are lighter with = power options with mods. However the e36 only has gavanized steel on one side, E46 have it double sided like VW/AUDI so a e46 will last you longer in the long run against rust(IE $$$ put in to it will ofer longer rewards)
I'd go with the 330 myself.

Typically, you start putting money into 7+ years old Bimmer. So even if you get 328is (E36) for cheaper than 330Ci, the maintenance cost over the next year or two will most like be much higher for 328is vs 330Ci.

Aside from being obviously faster (330Ci), it is a bit more roomier inside AND interior is definetely more luxurious than a 328is E36. E46 interior is identical copy to recently replaced E39 5-Series.
Plus more safety features [like more airbags + Dynamic Stability Control DSC for winter driving vs 328is E36 probably just has traction control (ASC-T)]
Also 330 has the same brakes as E36 M3.

If you can swing a 330, definitely the way to go.

People like you make me jelouse and amplify the fact that I know I'm doing something wrong. 19 and a 330ci what's the secret?

To be completely honest, the car was a gift from my parents. I'm very thankful to have the parents that I do. Aside from the fact, I think investing money wisely (easier said than done) is a big secret to it as well. I offered to pay for half of the car, but my parents refused.

Also, I purchased my first car with my own money. 1992 Honda Accord EX-R, which I drove fulltime for over a year before I got the 330Ci. I now use the Accord only for the winter.

Well can't complain to that, my parents drive a 1989 crown vic and think my car is a peice of junk cause it's so small even though it's the same length and close to the same weight, lol Gota love ignorence. Glad they never bought me a car It would have been a demestic mid size 4 door jobby If I would have let them.
Glad theirs still fortunate people out their, have fun with your nice head start in life.
