my friend told me that there is some kidda procedure that you do, that shows your car's "original km".. or sumthing like that. You put the key into the egintion, press the clutch, rev it .. or something..

any of you heard of this before? if so can you tell me how its done?

yup, it's true.

hold down your tripometer reset button with the ignition off, then turn the key to POS1 then let go of the trip button button.

It will go through a series of tests, (test all guages, lights, error codes, etc.) and display the KM which is stored in the ECU (not the cluster).

You dont even have a clue man, there is so much hidden shit on our cars, its funny.
on 97+ e36, doing the test Justin discribed, it shows real time RPMs, realtime speedometer(digital) and lotsa other crap, like if the engine was overreved(too bad there is a bug, it shows over rev when it wasnt :( ) it also shows how many km since your last oil change/last service and lotsa other crap that harder to read.

also 18button OBC has some hidden stuff too, like
digital voltmeter
digital speedometer (yes another one)
gas consumption in real time(like under the tachometer, but digital)
gas consumption liters per hours
how much gas left left in the tank
and much more

Why post in a thread you have no clue about? If you don't have a respectful answer/suggestion why post?

^ HOW...can someone post the "BMWcheats"...

I know how to do the trip meter/gauge test thing...
How do you do it while driving? I'm particularly interested in the digital fuel economy thing...and overrev...

well if i remember correctly u hold the left button in the dash down until it says test 0.0 when u get this release the button, then push it so u get to test 19.0 then it will say test off, then push it again quickly and it will activate this, then go to test 9.0 (or 7.0 can't remember) and then u'll be there, once ur in that set of information each time u push the button u get a different set of information like what sickfinga said

whoa so much going on in this thread.

SickFinga nailed it on the head. Between the guage cluster, on board computer, and ecu... we have access to loads of information on our cars.

11/18button OBC's have so many tricks.. it's awesome.

And for those who asked if other cars have these kinds of hidden functions, the answer is yes. VW has a plug under the dashboard which you can hook up to the USB on your laptop. There is dealer software which will give you complete access to reset the dash lights, give you history on the car, and let you change settings. You can change things with the click of a button like how your car horn sounds, how many KM until the doors automatically lock (default is 15km), change your interior chime, or turn it off. It will tell you if any doors are open, and which one. If the trunk is open. If will give real time information on your voltage, air/fuel ratio, RPM's, fuel efficiency... will even plot real time graphs as you're driving. I'm sure other cars have these kinds of features too... I'm just aware of VW because my friend has a VW Bora Wolfsburg. :)

Almost all new cars have self diagnostic capabilities...you just have to find out the protocol.

Mmmmmm, the Bora. That car is all gravy, and very unknown.

BORA is known... it's just called Jetta over here in North America. :)

Actually, they aren't identical...

For example, a 2001 Bora in Europe was equipped with AWD.
