Our 325it wagon has a free scheduled maintenance plan. The first oil change was at 24,000kms which is absolutly rediculous as far as I am concerned. Regardless we had the oil changed at 8000kms. After the 24000km oil service, the car now has 32000kms and is about 4500kms away from the next service according to the SI indicator.....
Here is my problem. I checked the oil just for the level and the oil is very very dark. I have a feeling they are using regular mineral oil for the oil changes at Budds. How the hell is regular mineral oil suppose to last and not degrade for 15,000kms???

BMW assures us that it is unessecary to do oil changes in between, but christ, this engine isn't going to last long in the long run......

Anyone have any insight into this or has experienced the same problem?

the intervals recommended by bmw are ridiculous.

I change mine every 8000km or so.

Ya I beleive so. I used to work at Pennzoil I know i know flame on i was a dirsty grease monkey that u didn't want working on your car. For the record i never had any complaints and actually had many compliments but it's true don't bring ur cars to some of these places many funn/bad stories aboutm some real idiots. Anyways from what i remeber the castrol bmw used was dark. My mobil goes a little darker than original and i change my oil+filter every 4-5 k's i can imagine it going pretty dark it i let it go for 8k's and my engine is clean.

I change my oil every 5000 km or earlier. Frequent oil change can't go wrong.
I hate BMW maintenance plan. It's BS!

full synthetic oil has a tendency to look darker than conventional oil thus appearing dirty when it isnt.

I have my oil changed by my maintainence plan every 10,000 miles. Before I take my car in I check the oil level and color. So far my car has 23,000 miles on it and its 2 and a half years old. Total of 2 oil changes and each time I checked my oil the color was like honey and looked brand new. My motor doesn't burn any oil either and I drive the car pretty hard alot of times too. Maybe they're not using the proper oil in your car, Jay?

Hope this helps...

I agree. I know what synthetic oil looks like and my E36's oil was always honey brown coloured........This is really dark, and the car isn't even pushed that hard.....

not all synthetic oil is dark, only certain brands are dark like Mobile 1, Lubro-Moly synthetic oil is like peanut oil/corn oil very light color, there are many different shades of colors but don't let the color of oil fool you thinking that it's dirty, even after a oil change & a spin around the block can make your oil look like old dirty oil

I dont know what kind of oil they are using im pretty sure as well that its castrol synthetic but i dont know about it not breaking down after 15000km. Thats an oil change once every year. I try and do mine every 5000km and i run mobil. Im pretty sure the recommended interval is 5000km/3months with regular oil but maybe im wrong. But you can't go wrong with too many oil chnages.

I second this, I flush my oil with crap oil till it's clean, 2 to 3 times.
Then use mobile 1 syntec. It's always clear and I only change my oil when the service lights tell me to, and when they do it's still golden.

I think bmws service interval for oil changes is total and complete bs! they just dont want u bringing ur car in often cos it costs them $$. oil must b changed evry 5oookms.
btw, is it normal for a 330i to use a pint of oil every 1000kms?

Wow... Your car burns 5 pints of oil between oil changes and you think this is normal I see why you change your oil every 5000k your engine is toast.

How does this propriety blend compare to Castrol's full synthetic that you can buy anywhere because even with Castrol full synthetic the interval for changing oil is 5k or 3 months. Just wondering.

Synthetic will last longer then that, but the first scheduled oil service was 24,000kms.........I don't care what kind of oil you use, that is rediculous.
