View Full Version : I need a winter beater, $4000 budget

Ok, I've had it with my truck, the water pump is seized, the alternator is screwed, the battery won't hold a charge, the tires aren't winterable, parking brake doesn't work, the frame is bent (meaning it can't get a proper alignment), a body mount is rusted out, the fenders are nice and rusted, it needs shocks, a tranny mount, and has 320,000k on it.

So here are my plans, I have $4000 to 'invest' in a beater, that is $4000 including taxes.

This is what I need, manual transmission, rear wheel drive, fuel injected, must seat at least 4, must be an import, have around 200k although less would be nice.

My current choices range from an e30, to another 4 cyl 2wd japanese mini-pickups (Toyota or Nissan).

I'm liking the e30 idea mostly because, well, I'm a BMW fan, I can find used parts everywhere, and they seem pretty easy to work on. A 325i or 325e would be nice.

I also like the pickup truck because as I found out with my current truck, they're generally bombproof, and if I drift in the snow, slide off the road, over a curb and onto someones front lawn, and usually drive away without damaging anything on the truck.

Mazda B2200 pickup truck.

My dad's got one edging onto 400,000km. Only two oil changes... brakes done ONCE, and tires changed. Other than that not a single tune up, nothing has broken on it, never needed to go to the shop. Pretty much bulletproof. Best part is... the heater is blowing super hot heat in a minute or so. It's rusted.. looks like shit... but that truck has taken a beating and refuses to let go.

my mechanic is selling his 93 sunbird or firebird (forgot which one) .. It has a brand new paint job ... 5 speed and drives perfectly ... he is asking $2000 for it and I'm telling you this car is more then just a beater .. there is a lot of life in it .. you'll be good for a few years with this car .. the only thing is that its not RWD..

I 100 % agree, plow through alot bigger snow banks then a e30 would More weight still don't rust, 1/8th the cost to repair and easier. Just as bullet proof
Not to mention the cops leave them alone unlike $4000 e30's
And well can mod the piss out of em still.thinking 740 turbo wagons/sedans as opposed to the 240's

Nelson.. you should get a toyota truck.. they are serious!

Try to find one for under 4g's That doesn't need the same $$$ to make good again.
I agree their great last long but no owner I know would ever sell theirs till it's finished and even then your looking at 1985's for 2g's.
