I don' t know anything about the 5 series. but my dads friend is having problems with his engine cooling system. He wants to know where is the engine cooling thermostat located?

which 5?
follow lower rad hose where it connects to the block...
The hose should connect to a thermostat housing which (as name indicates) houses the thermostat
Be carefull that there are numerous other reasons that might cause vehicle to overheat, rather than thermostat...
ie: air trapped in system, expansion tank cap not sealing (can be pressure tested), water pump impellers broken, etc... Blown head gasket,etc...
