Hi there, well since I had totalled my GTP on monday (hit a deer), I am now a BMW owner, some members were nice enough to give some info in the Looking for/for sale section.

I ended up buying a 1990 BMW 535i, 170,000KM, the car has been stored winters and I cannot find any rust anywhere, all service records were provided, the guy replaced the trim around the sides..etc..etc...

My first question is that the only thing that bugs me is that the interior while having no rips (good condition) tan has been extremely discoloured by uv? Strange, like you take the armrest down in the back and other hidden area it looks almost gold where in fades in and out from a washed out yellow look everywhere else...I have heard that there are shops around that can re-dye interiors?? Any one know?

General question related to maintenance, first time BMW owner converted from GM...I worked in auto parts for 7 years at a canadian tire while in school...ya I know I know but so I know the difference between good and bad parts...but how true is it that it is best to stay with genuine bmw parts? Is that in all cases, even with fluid etc??

Leads to my last question? I am very anal and keep al my cars immaculate, whenever i bought another car, I always swap all the fluids over to Synthetic, oil, tranny, diff..everything..just got the wife a 2001 grand cherokee limited and I spent $900 changing all the fluids on that!
Should I buy nothing but BMW filters for this car? What about the K&N? Only BMW fluids?? Looking for some advise...

THANKS ALOT GUYS!! Looking forwards to being an active member of this board...will post some pics later this weekend after I pick her up!!

Awesome! I see u sprung for the 535i, good call man u definitely won't regret it. With regards t fluids i normally put in bmw fluids whenever i can but other guys on here would know better than i do if it actually makes a difference. With regards to filters i would definitely put in a K&N, whats the harm or extra horsepower? lol

good luck and enjoy!

as for OEM parts, yea, I would stay with OEM parts as much as possible, its recommended that you use the OEM filter. I used motul oil, ams oil for the tranny and diff, no problems so far.

www.bmwe34.net has lots of tips for your car.

Any good quality oild (Castrol, Quaker State, etc.) will do, and any good quality oil filter will do aswell. Air filter, K&N works great. Always buy OEM parts were possible, or if there is a performance replacement, use that. Have fun with the 5er, and post some pics!

It depends on what the part is, for parts like plugs, wires, distributor, rotor and stuff like that i'd buy at the dealer.

Always compare prices, sometimes the dealer aint that much more......for ball joints, tie rods, and heavier ish parts that aren't much too them i buy aftermarket.

For brakes, umm stock rotors are really good, any high quality pad is fine, there are performance ones out there.

I have AC delco hoses on my car, lol its only a hose who cares...Timing belt dealer for sure.

So ya it depends on the part. Im not too picky on fluids anything good quality.

Lastly...my To-do list

-Oil change - Switch to Mobil One Synthetic.
-Rush out and get it oil sprayed for this year (krown)
-Tranny and diff service both over to synthetic fluids
-Replace bottom of door trim pieces...bubbling w/rust
-Replace front/back bmw symbols..(some defects)
-figure out vibration under load problem? Drive shaft balance or motor/tranny mounts??
-just found that it has an oil leak somewhere after sitting in my garage since sat....hhhmmm...will have to look after that!
-Lastly, keep my eyes open for some nice deep dish summer rims for next summer!!! :D

Thanks!! I looked very carefully for signs of overspray that it was repainted or anythingof which I could not find, so I think I am ok. I do have some work ahead of me, of which I do not mind.
First drive in the dark this morning and a lot of the dash lights are out, that is not too bad...the vibration under load (assuming mounts or driveshaft balance) I am going to have to get fix and then I thought that I could maybe smell a wee coolant smell when I turned up the heat, so possibly a heater core? A rad flush and fill with new t-stat was also on my list with knowing about the head gasket issues. So the car looks great, time for me to make sure it is in perfect mechanical condition as well.
Does anyone know, in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, am I stuck with B-K motors to get all my OEM parts? Am I better off buying on-line??

Thanks!

vibration sounds like driveshaft. Contact bimmersport, maybe he can ship parts out to you, he's in Mississauga

Coolant smell when you turn on the heat probably heater core (BIG BUCKS)
vibration under load: driveshaft center bearing (200 labour 70 for the part)
I would recommend a new driveshaft, or at least to get it balanced.
While you are at it, get a short shifter if you want an new shifter likages and probably a new flex disc.

Bruno, he has got an automatic tranny. :(
Why he needs that shifter at all?

Now if I can find one that nice out here for a decent price (why are 535s cheaper than 525s????)

Those seats look messed up, yet very nice condition! Odd. I've been involved with E34's for many years now, and I've never seen a discolouration like that before. Luckily you have many options to solve that problem if you wish...

Great looking autotragic. *th-up*
