I finally bought one today (no joke)... after years of hoping they'd come to America. Ordered it from Mercedes Benz Mississauga, expect delivery end of Feb next year. This is what I ordered...

Silver/Silver Passion Coupe
Black leather interior
Smart shift auto
tach/clock
Power sunroof
A/C
Paddle shift
Locking storage box
Air filter
Heated seats/mirrors

Came to $23,400 pretty much fully loaded. Can't wait.

I'm curious to know why you chose to buy a SMART car? Is it just for the gas you will be saving?

Is the coupe the one that doesn't look like a triangle? cause when i was in the UK last summer there were low smart cars that sort of looked like a crx

pics are working now. I drove a few of them and enjoyed the ride. It's actually quite fun with the 6-spd sequential gearbox. The gas savings is only one reason I bought it.... I drive so much, getting sick of putting $45 gas in my Outback every 4 days. This thing only take $14 of diesel for 550km! If I want to go fast, i'll have my GT2 next summer for that.

yeah... already have it planned... Alpine MP3 deck, 1 set of components up front, amp under passenger seat, small custom .6cuft 10" sub box in the rear hatch area. Yeah baby! Already looking into lowering springs and Brabus deep dish 17" wheels.

The SMART car actually has a better crash rating than the BMW E36. You'd be surprised how strong and well designed that car is... Mercedes wouldn't sell it if it was unsafe.

i herd somewher that they have the same crash ratings as the E class benz. i want one. i got hooked on em in italy this summer, i espically like the roadster, but that wont come to NA anytime soon. would this car be practical for the winter though?

What I really want to see is Randy autocrossing that car on the BMWCC course and whopping everyone else's ass especially the Mini Coopers who usually have the fastest times! Now that's what I want to see, haha!

And also I'd like to see the SMART car version to the old Mini Cooper auto-x video that's posted in the videos section :D

Hey Randy are you going to take it to the BMWCC DE event at Mosport? :D

Justin e36
10-20-2004, 10:59 PM
btw.. the official name is "smart" not "SMART"... or "Smart"... just thought I'd let you guys know. :)

as randy said... better crash ratings than the E36... even better crash ratings than the E-Class. The frame is designed to transfer the impact to the top / rear of the vehicle... instead of crushing the front.

Head on collission with an E-Class:
http://www.mercedes-benz.ca/mbccustom/smart/safety/images/crash.jpg

http://www.mercedes-benz.ca/mbccustom/smart/safety/images/c10b.jpg

and the winner is?
http://www.mercedes-benz.ca/mbccustom/smart/safety/images/c11b.jpg

smart!
http://www.mercedes-benz.ca/mbccustom/smart/safety/images/c4b.jpg

want to change the color?.. buy different colored body panels and snap them on! It's like LEGO. Take a good look and you'll see why the crash ratings are so good... you're basically driving inside an very thick roll cage!
http://www.mercedes-benz.ca/mbccustom/smart/safety/images/c5b.jpg

smart car's have some pretty cool and handy little options. For example... if you're too lazy to shift... the car will automatically shift-up when you hit redline. It will also automatically down-shift if you are going too slow for the current gear you're in. Not to mention anyone can drive manual... since it has an automatic clutch. :)

Benz moved a few of their handy features over to the smart car as well... such as the 1-touch turn signal. Give it a light touch and your signal will blink 3 times before turning off. (instead of having to hold it there.. or having to put it back to the 'off' position).. doesn't sound like a lot, but if you had it on your car... it'd be a nuisance when you have to go back to the old way. The car is very very slow to get up to highway speeds... (what is it?.. 17 seconds or so from 0-60MPH). However it has enough spunk for city driving without feeling left behind. While gas savings with a smart car seem really good... if you really look into the numbers, you can get a VW Jetta/Bora diesel and save the same amount on gas, and have a much more functional vehicle... but you'll also be paying more for it. But also remember that the gas tank on the smart car is so small you'll still be filling up every week with daily driving... you'll just be paying a lot less each time. :)

In all?... It really is a smart car to own and drive. Is it silly looking?... Yes, very. But I think it's just because it's new---I'm sure they're used to it in Europe already. Go check out Maranello Ferrari down on Steeles.. not too far from the weekly meets. There's one outside on the front lawn. The thing is TINY. I feel it looks kinda like a clown car. Interestingly enough... the smart car still gets more attention at car shows than ferrari's and lamborghini's... people just love to see and talk about this little thing.

Congrats Randy! *th-up*

Yeah but you dont buy this car for Formula 1 driving like in your CSL. look in the photography section where I took a picture of two Smart cars I took in Paris. Tell me where you can park like that with most other cars out there. I saw so many find parking anywhere. A great little car that has so much room inside. I asked one owner there what they cost and they told me 10000 Euro so about 16000 Canadian. Good price
