View Full Version : whats up with this noise?

what up guys,

I have a 03’ 330i. When I am driving and sometimes “giver her”, I find that when I get into the higher revs (past 5000 rpm) it starts to make a noise. It sounds like it is straining and sounds kind of tinny. I thought it was the air filter not sending enough air into the motor, so I changed the filter to K&N (which make a huge difference I find) but it still does it? Not sure what to do??? Took it back to dealership and they say they can’t hear anything. Its getting me mad, use I don’t drive the car hard at all, but sometime I just want to go and it does this. *mumble*

Can you explain where the noise is comming from?
Engine, tranny, exahust...?

Well to be honest, I am not the most knowledgeable car person. I think it is coming from the engine. It sounds like it’s staining. However I am finding out that it used to happened on warmer days, now that the weather is getting a bit cooler, its not as rough. Like I said before it only happens when I push it hard. What to do? *sad*

fu*k that shit man, take it back to BMW .... They can't hear anything ??????? thats they'r problem, u dun care u want the car fixed !!
u'v paid alot and im pretty sure u'v got warrenty. if u live in mississauga, Tania Noor works in the dealership there and shes a very nice and helpful lady, try talking to her if ur noise is not gone.

and by the way, hows the K&N air filer, do u recomend it? what difference does it make, power or sound ??

I could not stand it any more; so I got the big guns involved, my mom. LOL. She has taking over, and the dealership is looking at it for me. I hope the can solve this problem, or as the big gun say, "they can take the piece of sh$t and shove it up their a#s". *uzi* So I am waiting.

As for the K&N filter, oh man do I ever suggest it. I find the car to have a better acceleration and have a much better rumble to its sound. I don’t think the torque changed, but it sure feels like it. Only downfall, it hurts the gas mileage.

i have the excat same problem with my 330i i thought it was normal...after 5000rpm when im pushing it i get i sort of ringing, buzzing or as you described it 'tinny' noise...tell me how it turns out cause i'll bring my car in to complain also. the sound comes from the engine i think..i got an auto tranny what do u have vegabass?

where did you buy K&N filter ?

I wonder if you're referring to a pinging noise from the engine. Does it sound like a playing card against the spokes of a bicycle wheel as it rotates?

10-17-2004, 10:50 PM
yea kind of why is it normal?

10-17-2004, 11:07 PM
yea kind of why is it normal?
Oh no, not normal at all.... Pinging is not a good thing. It's usually caused by overly advanced timing or low octane gas and happens most likely at full throttle.

Our cars require 91 and above so I hope that's what you're using. If not, try putting a 94 from Sunoco. You may need a couple of fillups before you clear your tank. See if this helps otherwise, go to your mechanic.

i ALWAYS put 91 octane gas in, no matter what, i dont pay for gas so i have no reason to put lower octane gas in regardless of price, i was just driving my moms 530i (which takes the same gas as mine cause i fill both cars weekly) and her car sounds solid at 5000 rpm plus until it shifts. I think i'll bring in my car this week

Did you Sharked or installed any engine software? Apparently some people started to report Shark issues with 330s manufactured in late 2003.

Mine stock 330Ci ('03) is okay (knock on wood) and I do redline it.

Let us know how it turns out.

Good luck

Does your mom pay for you're gas, or how do you get it free?

where did you buy K&N filter ?
Canadian Tire, or just about any other autoparts store
