Ok, I'm a BMW virgin, well in the sense that I haven't owned one, but been in a few and have just fallen in love with whole thing.

My old junker has just about bit the dust and need to find a new set of wheels and have been looking(which at least I found not that easy) in the Toronto area for something in the 1994-95(maybe even 93), E36. The ones I have seen have been at dealers and in really bad condition, in that the leather has been chewed up, rust, missing parts.....

I've seen more then a few 318i's up for grabs, but I keep hearing from people I work with the stay away from 318's.(comments?). I wouldn't mind a 325 either.
If I happen to go for a 318, anything I should keep my eye open for? Hell, I'll take any tips I can take on buying a used E36

Besides autotrader where else can I look? Would prefer a private sale.

Thanks.... Hope to find something soon, riding the bike to the GO station in the morning is getting mighty cold :)

first off Welcome to the MAX community, private sales are nice because you save 1 tax, but you will really have to check the car over before purchasing, you can always check the "For Sale" section here on this site

Thanks Quack, thats one of the reasons to save on the tax. But for sure, I'll go over the wheels with a fine tooth comb. There was one or 2 I saw on Autotrader, and I was alittle slow to jump on the phone and have a look at them.

I've been in a 540, I KNOW what its like, I think thats how it all started. The ride was unlike any other set of wheels I've been in. :) But 540 is out of the budget for me :(

09-22-2004, 08:02 PM
what is your budget if you don't mind me asking, maybe we can help you out finding something for you

welcome to max ! *wave*

with that budget .... E30 is a good start, you can even have lots of money left overs to done up the car. :)

09-23-2004, 09:31 AM
Not really planning on doing up the car.
Even with the E30's how is the reliability? Again I'm a bmw virgin :) So not sure if they just keep going and going? No need to tell you like for a North American car, those things hit anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 and start to fall apart. I have to see any Bimmer I've seen, all look in excellent condition, but what about the engine and everything else attached to it ?

On a side note, just checking AutoTrader this morning and found this one. (Since they the links don't work, I'll post the ad and picture.) Don't think this guy knows what he's trying to sell, or maybe he's thought it was a 540 all along? :) I'm sure it's just a screwup on AutoTraders part..

It's true folks. Have a look on AutoTrader :)

Anyways, I'm going to see a guy tonight about a '94 318is with 157Km on it. Any tips on what I should be looking at?

3L v8 gives the same amount of power as my 535, note, there's nothing wrong with E34's. :P

You can pick up a descent 325 under your price range, but you want to look for an E36 from 94+ to avoid the rear subframe problem.

save a couple more grand and go 328 *mw* :)

I guess the key is to find that eluded 325 :)

Thanks for the list, thats sure going to be a help. But MAN, seems like the list has more negatives then positives :)

Anyways. I just got back from a trip to see that 318i, well have to say it was a waste of time, no wonder it was priced $5700. Lets run down the list. Note that I saw the car in the parking lot of the guys apartment, after 8pm, which of course is dark already. His buddy was there with his bimmer and had his headlights on, so within the first 5 seconds, I new it was a write off. First he must of used sandpaper to wash the thing. The trim was falling apart. He opened the door, and all I could hear was all this rattling in the door(both doors), I will say the leather was in good condition. Then comes a looksy at the engine, and remember it's DARK out there(I did have a flashlight in case, which I didn't bother using), and I could see with what light there was. There was what look like hockey or electrical tape on his air intake. He said there was a leak. That's as far as I got, wasn't worth looking at anymore.... Oh and the stick shift was ready to come apart. Well, back to looking again......

Lesson learn

3.0L v8 *drink*

The 530i did have a 3.0 V8, it was an awesome middle car at the time. 0-60 in 6.9 with the 5-speed, it could run with the old 535i for less money.

appearently that 3.0L V8 was detuned when they put it into the 530, the motor was originally built for racing in some sort of series in the good old days
