View Full Version : Looking for a 540

Hello all:

Sorry, didn't know whether to post this in classifieds. Thinking about buying a 2000 540i with sport package. Has to be a six speed. Price ranges that I've seen thru Autotrader and the newspapers have price ranges from $26 to $40K. I think the top end of the range are cars from the BMW dealerships.

Am I really getting myself into trouble by buying at the lower end of the range (which is what my budget is)? I will have any candidate checked out by my mechanic, but wanted to know if I should just plain avoid the low end of the spectrum.

Here's something in my price range: AutoTrader 540 (http://www.trader.ca/Automega/Default.asp?Trader=1&CAT=1&mknm=688&Region=&adid=3924672&dContact=264295&VLot=/Automega&ADS=3924672%7C&SRVlot=1&SRslts=1&q1=%3D+1&c1=%40category&q3=688&c3=%40makeid&q4=17365&c4=%40modelcode&q5=sport%2A&c5=%40adcopy&q6=%3E%3D+2000+and+%3C%3D+2000&c6=%40year&q7=&c7=%40askprice&q14=&c14=%40subcategory&mknm=688&mdnm=540I&Region=&subcategory=&alpha=)

Unknown mileage. Maybe you guys can shoot me some general info re problems/issues with 2000 540s?

Thanks in advance!

This should pretty much sum up all the $hit that can happen.

Usually a 2000 going for this price has high mileage well over 100K Km.

I think it would be wise to pick up something around the $30k - $35k range with about 80k on it, I bought my 98 540i Sport last year with 120k on it for $27k

Good luck with your search. You definitely won't regret it.

Do what I did,
check accident history and look for updated service history by way of receipts if possible (anybody can stamp the book).

Receipts are the proof in the pudding.

$30,000 is a decent price for a decent 540i
in '99 the M62 engine developed the M62tu (technically updated) characteristics.

I noticed my upper rad hose is different from the '97 & '98 540's and the alternator is cooled via coolant...

Great car if you can afford the insurance...

I was thinking of selling mine a year ago, but not anymore...
Too much fun and grin factor when I drive it...

BTW 120,000 km on the M62 engine is when it is considered mature..not over the hill.

Thanks for all of the responses, gents.

Is insurance an issue for this car? Hope it's not in the C5 league; after all, it is a 4 door family sedan, isn't it? :D

I don't know how bad your record is, but mine is very very bad, so the insurance is damn high even though it's a family sedan it's still a BMW

Try to get something with 70-80K, preferrably with extended warranty.

5 series under warranty = Big Money!

But if you can afford it, what the hell...
