As much as I love Bimmers, one thing I dont like is the red illumination. I prefer cooler colors, just a personal preference.

Blue looks good and is easy on the eyes.

integras have a nice mellow blue color except TypeR which has red/amber ...too harsh on eyes

It looks pretty good, I give the owner props for it. The blue doesn't belong on a bimmer tho. Red lighting is classic on a bimmer like the twin kidney grille...it's a trademark*th-up*

OEM (Original Equipment Maufacturer) means that it looks like the car came like that from the factory.

That doesn't make sense to me

Didn't BMW use amber because NASA said it was the easiest on the eyes lol:confused:

don't know if it was nasa that said it but red is easier on the eyes. it's not as distracting like blue...you can pay attention to the road easier with being distracted cause of the red gauges.

ya... i find amber easier on my eyes... and personally i like how it looks

wow.. so much misinformation in this thread... jeez.

First off... Amber is the easiest colour on the eyes, your eyes will adjust quickest from pitch black and red the numbers easiest with Amber.

Red while also good on the eyes becomes hypnotizing and also causes aggression in long drives, so they're staying away from it.

Blue is the worst on your eyes.. (shortest wavelength)... from pitch black (like cruising on the highway w/o streetlights) then looking down at the guage cluster your eyes have to dilate to see the blue colors / read the words.

And no it's not like VW. VW only has blue on the guage cluster with red needles... everything else (i.e. climate control, stereo, window switches, etc.) all light up in red. Not blue as the e46 above. VW is switching back to Amber apparently for next year's models.

And lastly.. I've already started doing a similar LED conversion on my car. I'm going to finish it up when it gets colder out.. since I can't do many mods in the cold... but changing the interior color I can do since I can bring each individual component into the house to do, then plug it back in with the new color. (window switches, guage cluster, climate control, headlight switch, etc.) The scheme I'm going with is BLUE for all "information" which lights up... and RED for anything interactive. (i.e. buttons, switches). So like on the headlight switch.. the only red part will be the little red arrow on the knob itself... the part which tells what position the headlight is in will be blue.

here's an e36 example.. notice it uses 2 shades of blue, and red.

another rendition... using the same guage-pod...

notice it's 2 shades of blue.. (not 1).. and red. The camera seems to wash out the blue and the red doesn't show up much. Cheapo camera... anyway, you get the point.

Looks Toyota Sienna-ish. Except the Sienna's dash lights up the regular Toyota green which looks wierd.

Looks like a big cell phone.

A lot of effort put into such a trivial mod, in my humble opinion. And if he actually paid someone to do that...

not really.
it takes around 2-5 mins per window switch to change the color.
headlight switch + foglight is just a plastic filter. 1 minute to pop the old one out and put the new one in.
OBC = 10 mins max. 2 LED's to soldier and 1 plastic filter.
Climate Control = 30 mins or so. It takes patience to crack it open and get to the LED's to resoldier them.
Headunit = aftermarket one.
Guages = 1-2 hours.

In the end you're looking at around 4 hours of labour including the time to dismantle everything, do the conversion, and put it back together.

Plus it's something you can do a little at a time.. you don't need to do it all at once.

For me.. when my window switch bulbs blew when I replaced them I decided I might as well change the color while I was at it. It really updates the look of the interior. I think the guy above used too much blue... but blue accents with mainly red.. (a la VW Jetta/Bora) really looks good. It's a simple mod to do... and total price is around $5 if you already have a soldiering iron ($23.99 - radio shack) and soldier ($3.99 radio shack)

where did you get the gauges in km/h?

JazzM
09-13-2004, 01:48 PM
Blue gauges are also an ALPINA signature item on the Alpina Z8, B7, and all their other cars.

Looks nice, though personally I prefer the RED airplane cockpit look. Why do you think they use red light in dark rooms.

See, that's way too much time to spend on a mod with no functional use to me.

There are a few places:

1 - Europe has some KM/h guages.. but with white face-plates.
2 - Modify your current stock guage faces
3 - US Spec face-plates have KM/h on the inner circle and MPH on the outer circle.. (see the two attachments I posted up above).
4 - You can get stock e36 Alpina guages... personally I think they're the sexiest looking by far. The only thing is.. you'll have the small alpina logo on it... and well it's kinda like putting ///M on a non-M car. It's up to you. These come in blue, green, white, purple, and orange LED's.

Also they come in 140 mph / 155mph / 160mph / 220kph / 240kph / 260kph / different red-lines / mpg and kpg guages... so you can make sure it matches whichever e36 you have.

oh and just for another example of what you can do... by far the easiest of the conversions... have LED's at the top of your cluster illuminating the whole thing up. It doesn't show up well in the picture.. but in person the whole thing has an even blue glow...looks kinda rice in blue, but in red it'd look much better.. and if the whole thing wasn't white but only the guages.

Here ya go:
