I was wondering...the 323 is the same as the 320 correct? and the 328 is the same as the 325 right? They have the same amount of power dont they, just smaller engines? What other significant differences is there?

the 323 and 328 were only made up to year 2000 right? and then replaced by the 320 and 325?

Thanx guys

Nope. The 323 and the 325 both have the same 2.5L engines, with the 325 making more HP but the 323 making more torque. The 328 had the 2.8L engine making (duh) the most power. The 320's in North America did not come in coupes just 4 doors, and they had I think a 2.2L making like 160HP or something.

320=168hp 2.2L 2001+
323=172(i think)hp 2.5L 1999-2000
325=175hp 2.5L 2001+
328=195(i think)hp 2.8L 1999-2000
330=220hp 3.0L 2001+

all good cars and all have bmw quality although some are slower then others they all have enough to get to highway speeds and off a light*th-up* 320 ain't that peppy though:confused: the 323 and 325 have the same engine but different technology if i'm not mistaken which gives the 325 more horsepower *wave*

Yikes.

The 323/328 were available from 1999-2000. The 320/325/330 arrived for the 2001 model year, and are still the same today. Note that the 320 is only available as a sedan.

320i - 2.2L Inline-6, 168hp
323i - 2.5L Inline-6, 170hp
325i - 2.5L Inline-6, 184hp
328i - 2.8L Inline-6, 193hp
330i - 3.0L Inline-6, 225hp

The 323i looks slow compared to the other lower models, but keep in mind it has a fatter torque curve and feels much quicker than the 320i everywhere in the rev range. The 325i feels very similar to the 323i down low, but has a noticeable love for high revs which is totally missing in the 323i. The 328i and 330i are quite a bit quicker, the 330i more respectively. The ringer combination, and this is known by many E46 enthusiasts, is the 328 models. They had the bigger engine of the time, but the 99-00 models also had less boosted steering with much better feel, a gas pedal that actually has feedback, and many smaller things like the door handle's actuation and some interior controls feel of much higher quality.

Any other questions ask, I'm a freakin encyclopedia when it comes to E46's.

Big jump between 325 and 330 power, and an even bigger jump between 330 and M3. and its only .5L and .3L Go fig eh?

the brakes thru out the different models are bigger....I know the 330ci has huge brakes, 17'' rim min.......I think its close to the size of the m3s brakes.

330 front brakes are the exact same diameter as E46 M3 brakes, 12.8".

323's can use 15" wheels, they just barely fit. 320/325/328 minimum 16", 330/M3 minimum 17" (though a handful of 16's just barely work).

Do you think this also applies to the 323? - I drove 2 323s and 2 328s while shopping (both 1999s) and the steering felt the sameon both models, so did the controls.

Well yeah, all M52TU cars have the same everything but drivetrain. The 328 just has more power, which I think everyone wants more. ;) My mom has a 323i 5-spd here, still good power.

Mystikal - that's what I though but I was curious about this part of the comment - "many smaller things like the door handle's actuation and some interior controls feel of much higher quality (on the 328)". Has anyone else found this or is a precption thing caused by the better feel of greater power?

Oh no, go to a dealer and try it out. The door handles changed their angle of opening and it feels less solid. In the interior the radio controls and I think climate feel distinctly less cushioned and more like an econo car. Very very small details I know, but they bother me whenever I get into an M54-engined car.

I was refering to the 1999/2000 323 vs the 1999/2000 328, they are both M52TU cars, are the not?
