So I took my gf to the skatepark. I gave her the keys to open the door while I put my bike on the rack. She went to start the car (not sure why) while I was doing it. It was in first.

My car lept over the curb, and smashed down on the oilpan. It was night so I don't know what else is wrong. I got it towed to Lyons auto body and now I am waiting to see what damage they find and proceed from there.

She is paying for all of it.

I need an oil pan people!

Make sure to check that no control arms, steering, and stuff are dammaged. My cuzin ran over a curb with my 325e (that was when it was his, now that he did that stupid stuff, its mine now)
and all that looked wrong was the oil pan, but when i check under a fiew months after i got my car, there was this big dent covered by my new front apron.

Ill get it checked no worries. My valence is probably bent from pulling it back over.

My wheels were straight though. I PRAY my RM's did not bend.

You got PM. *th-up*

When my cuzin hit that curb, the rims were gone. But then again, he hit the crub straight on. I think he forgot witch pedal was the break and decided to go 50/50 (auto tranney). And you said your car just rolled off the curb? That shouldnt be that bad, but just check it anyways, you dont want to ruin your allingment cauz out of round wheels. And if that sounds like too much to do, just remember, your g/f said she'll pay for it...*th-up*

True, I was putting in a tach today in my garage and I started the car in first on mistake. If I haven't of put the e-brake on it would of hit a book shelf.

Sorry, don't know anyone with an Oilpan.

Was the e-brake on? I've done it in my car quite a few times, but the e-brake always kept the lurch to a max of like 5".

Oh man, thats to bad. I have done it before, I used to never start it with the clutch engaged, just slip it in neutral and start. After I did that once, I just always put the clutch in now.

The worst was my e36 when I put a motronix ssk in. 65% reduction, people didn't know where 1st was, they thought it was in neutral when really it was in gear.

You have to lift the motor to take off the oil pan?

I asked him because I replaced the pan on my e30 325e a month ago, and found a few good shortcuts that the writeup on bmwe30.net doesn't include.

If you don't lift the motor, you have to drop the pan a few inches (it'll hit the suspension crossmember), then reach in the gap and unbolt the oil pump. If you DO lift the motor, you don't have to remove/replace the pump, which saves a helluva headache.

I borrowed a cherry picker from a friend, undid the motor mounts, droped the subframe about 1.5" on longer subframe bolts, and hoisted the motor about 4" up.

This allowed me enough clearance to remove the pan and fit the new one in place without banging the gasket into anything. And like I said, this way I didn't have to screw with the pump at all.

Job took about 3.5 hours start to finish, and was a great excuse to spend $150 on new tools at Sears :)...

damn that sucks man, i guess thats why it good to have the clutch safety switch.....most cars are like that, you gotta push the clutch to start it

Dude, I don't have 400 dollars to just fork over to get it fixed($185 pan, perhaps oil pump,3 hours labour at 70 bucks an hour). I just do not make that much money. I would expect anyone girlfriend or not to at least try and pay for an accident they caused, its being responsible for your actions.

Trev, I don't think e30s got the switch until 88.

Lol, even if my g/f didnt cause the accident, she still would pay for it. *wiggle*

1. Was the car a stick?
2. If so why wasn't it already parked in reverse?
3. Why did your girl friend have the keys?
4. Will she pay?
5. Sorry to hear about this. Almost happened to me at the farmers market pulled a little plastic off my spoiler.

Seriously, did you READ the thread AT ALL?

Actually I didn't read the thread just felt like posting at the time not reading.

Anyway, while learning how to drive stick it was advised when parking in a space forward place the car in reverse. When parking in a space backwards place the car in 1st.

This way if you forget to take the car out of gear an put in the proper gear before driving off you want run in to a wall or other; however, its not full proof because if your going to hit something your going to hit it no matter what.

There are exceptions such as when parking on a hill nose facing down, put the car in reverse or when parking on a hill nose facing up put the car in 1st.
