whould would be the best engine to put into a 87 325e with the least amount of work.

one that uses same tranny, and one that would use the same engine mounts

Spend the couple of extra bucks and get the M50 conversion done. You can still use the old transmission (I did) and you will be so happy!

BTW - I'm selling my car. The only reasone i'm selling it is because I really want to move out and buy a house.

Ummm......no. You would need to make me an offer of about $7,500 USD.

If you're looking for something really cheap, a m20b25 is a big upgrade over the m20b27

to do the M50 conversion, you'll need an E34 (pass side) mount and an E28 (driver side) mount. The hardest thing to get is the E34 M20 oil pan... very rare and a small fortune at the dealership. For safe braking, a 325ix (or 750il) brake booster is required (although an old E21 booster will work -- how reliable is a 25yr old part?) to clear the new plastic intake manifold. You might also need to change the rad for clearence issues.

A cheaper way for you to get a significant HP increase for your 2.7L is by installing a 2.5L head. Be aware for this work in your favour the 2.5L pistons must also be swapped (same bore as your 2.7L). That means you need to pretty much get a complete M20/B25 motor which would be hard to resist just dropping in without any dissecting. Nitrous might be a cheaper/faster alternative for your motor providing the condition is okay and you install it properly. Can't beat 75HP for under $750!

I think you mean the e34 m50 oil pan...not the m20.

either one is fine... As far as I understand, both M50/M20 blocks use the same pan-bolt patterns and i'm guessing the M20 525i oil pan is more available.

Are you sure!? Then the E34 M20 pan (front sump) should be identical to the E30 M20 (same setup)...and you should be able to fit that on the M50....
