I've got a '91 318i, the sticker on the inside of the door says 318iS ... do I have the m40 or m42? I'm really confused on this one.

if your car is a 2 door it is a 318is
if it's a 4 door it is a 318i
so if it's the the 318i you have a M40
but if it's the 318is you have a M42
i'm pretty sure i'm right.......any other opinions?

Sounds right to me.

You have the m42. I have a 91 318i 4-door and its has an m42 in it. check these links, they show what engine codes for whatever year you need to look at.

Looking at the statistics site in an earlier reply, it says I have a 318iS engine in my 4 door 318i labeled car. I've got DOHC, my owners manual says i've got 135 horses. So, that means i've got an M42, correct? I KNOW i've got DOHC in my car... And, the M42 goes into the 318is, correct? I'm still confused.

Yes, should be M42

So, is that a screw up? Did they put a 318iS engine in a 4 door? Or is that normal?

I think that engine went in all 91 318/318is cars. BMW didn't just screw up and put the wrong engine in there.

Damn, if they did screw up ... that'd be cool. Haha.

You have an M42. I dont believe M40 motors made it to the U.S. There is no difference in engines between the modles (the M20 found in a 325iS is the same as a 325i and the M42 found in a 318iS is the same as a 318i). And the 318i I am reffering to is the later modle plastic bumpered 4-door not the M10 powered 318.
