Garage door remote control

I installed a built in garage door remote control in my car over the weekend.

I picked up a Skylink remote for $22 at the local Home Depot. It can operate pretty much any garage door out there, and it uses a 12 volt battery.

Wiring was straight foward. I used the 12 volt power source from the glovebox flashlight charger to power the remote. I wired in a non-lighted power window button to the button on the remote, and installed it in the factory fader location.

It took me about an hour to install and it works great!

I did the same on my 540i.

Installed my door opener to the sunroof power wire and grounded to the screw in the same vacinity.

Hooked it up via a momentary contact switch (always opened) and for about $7 I got myself a killer homelink feature which is ignition powered and all you see is this cool black button beside the sunroof panel.

Anybody who is in the car thinks the car came stock like that.

You don't want to know how much BMW wanted for the actual Homelink panel insert near the sunroof..

Every once in a while you got to pull off a Mcgyver move!
