Ahh, the joys of having avaliable techs and a shop at your own hands....lol, are you installing shocks as well?

If getting them installed by a "professional" turns out to not be practical enough, get a few of your friends together on a Saturday or something (tell them drinks are on you) and have them help you out. The proper amount of research and minute amount of guts is all that's needed to change them out...

Good luck. I can't wait to be at the same stage...

its pretty easy to install yourself, as long as you have a spring compressor (i say that, even thouhg i am a full time tech.)
if you live in vancouver pm and i can give u a hand....if not pack those babies up and send them my way ;)

You can rent a good spring compresser from part sourse. they don;t charge anything to rent a tool. Or do what i did once, and wrap it up in a sheet, cover it in duct tape and stand back as you undo the last nut.

good stuff seba, whats the drop gonna be like? O, and does that mean that ur sticking ith the e30?

SebSter
03-17-2004, 04:07 PM
ok.. we didnt ask my mechanic yet how much it would be, but my dad was freaking me out telling me how you have to take apart everything, compress the springs, etc..and then do a full allignment after the springs are installed, he was telling me the whole install would cost us in the range of 200-400 dollars.. i dunno much about it so i dunno if this is true or not

cause of that though, im sure i wont be doing the install by myself..

as for the other q's, the springs are brand new - they are h&r sports, cost me $450 overall, cause they are for an ix, and im only gonna be putting in the springs for now, new shocks may or may not come later, depends how much money i can save, aand the drop is supposed to be about 1.3 in the front, 1.2 in the back.... but ive been told i can expect a bit more than the estimated drop that they give ... all i wanted was to close up the fender gaps, im not looking to slam it since its my daily driver (and through the winter too)

Its not that big of a job. The rears are so simple. I did it with a wrench and a crow bar.

The fronts take time. I have not got it aligned since I got mine done.

SebSter
03-17-2004, 04:42 PM
wont that cause really uneven wear on the tires though?

bmwm5lover
03-17-2004, 04:55 PM
taking sharp turns, hitting curbs, going over potholes, are lal things that mess with ur alignemnt... dont worry too much seba....
As for getting them installed, when i got my e28 rear lowered, i paid 60 a side...so all together it wiuld have been~ 240, at this shop in scarbarough(bulgarian dude)

A bit OT, but Jay, do u have the H1 High beams, or just the normal sealed beams, and how do they looked teamed up with the flat H4's?

CHarlie is known to be the Best BMW mechanic in Toronto(or so people claim). I personally take my car to him, and pretty much only him, and thus, so far i can't complain much, if at all. Usually, he can "hook you up" for very reasonable prices(got my T-belt done, for about 3/4 of the regular price), if you want his number, LMK, and ill PM u it....

Sealed highs. They look fine, I never notice the difference.

Yeah, all-star BMW tech. He's in Sauga, I went over there and met him on Monday. Great guy, he'll be doing a lot of my work from now on.

His number is 416-949-5701. He gives out that number on a card, no need to keep it private. :)

Ok I need some expert opinions here. Just talked with our "family mechanic" and he claims the following: 1. I MUST change my shocks if changing the springs. 2. I MUST do a re-allignment after installing the new ones. 3. New shocks will cost in the $600 range all around. 4. Re-allignment will cost around $250.

Now, I know this cant be true. For one, the H&R sports are designed to work with the stock shocks, though I know many suggest to upgrade shocks when upgrading the springs, the fact is since the drop isnt that big, the shocks will be fine. Second, these prices seem a bit bogus, where he got $600 for new shocks and an allignment for $250 i dont know.

Someone help me out here, I it seems like a bit much just for putting on new springs, especially when I know some people do this on their own without any big problems..and my dad is convinced now that if I put these on without doing all that work that its gonna **** up the car and ill be going through new sets of tires every 3 months. Can someone who actually knows gimme some advice here?

bmwm5lover
03-17-2004, 05:46 PM
im no expert seba, but those prices sound pretty BS to me....Depending on the shocks, yes they will cost 600(bilstein yellows, if they fit the e30, are about 150 a pop, times 4), but an alighnment for 250? I got mine done on the e28 for something like 40 or 60$....
Im positive that ur tires are not going to go every 3 mths, yes they prob wont last AS LONG, but the difference will not be sagnificant....
Just put them on somewhere cheap and dont worry too much,...

id like to hear what the others have to say....

SebSter
03-17-2004, 05:58 PM
Yeah thats what im thinking too, and yeap i wanna hear some opinions from some mechanics or people who've done this before, just so Im sure about what Im doing, more so so i can convince my dad... even though its my car, its his final word on most decisions concerning it.

SebSter
03-17-2004, 06:50 PM
Just spoke to Charlie, he said $220 for the full install cause on the ix the front's are a bit harder to do.

T.Dot_E30
03-17-2004, 07:36 PM
Im not sure about the ix, but normally if the mechanic is careful and marks where the suspension parts are when u take em out, and put them back close to how it was, you alignment shouldn't be off, if anything every little, from the lowering.

most guys who install their springs themself do adjust their alignment themselfs, it may not be as close as a computer, but eyeballing it gets it close, until u check it on a computer. i

I dont htink u should get a perfect alignment jus yet, bcus im sure once u drive it for a bit, ur gonna wanna do the struts the shocks. In that case you would have had to pay $250(ur case) again after u do the shocks/struts for another alignment.

SebSter
03-17-2004, 07:53 PM
yeah, plus people here say charlie is the best guy when it comes to work on bimmers, and he said that i woudlnt need to do a reallignment, so im just gonna go to him to do it... that is as soon as i can convince my dad that its gonna be ok, lol

T.Dot_E30
03-17-2004, 08:35 PM
how much did u pay for them if you dont mind me asking?

Im in the market for springs and shocks/struts.

SebSter
03-17-2004, 08:37 PM
it was $450 for the springs brand new.. i was looking around for a while, not many options for an ix.. so i just found a place and got them to order these for me

T.Dot_E30
03-17-2004, 08:59 PM
ok thx, i found a local place that would sell me some for my car for $350, i donno how much the h&rs woulda been.........but the shocks/struts are a killer, like ~$600 for bilstiens

SebSter
03-17-2004, 09:00 PM
yep shocks/struts are expensive...thats why im gonna just put the h&rs for now and leave the rest stock, no money...plus im not tracking it or anything so ill be fine with just the springs

BMW BMXer
03-17-2004, 09:50 PM
Yes to need struts. Not to alignment. Like Trevor said just mark it.

The only thing adustable on e30s is direction and toe. Camber is not adjustable and thats what goes all fubar are most lowered cars (ie hondas). If charlies doing it then don't worry about it.

The drop isnt really that drastic that it will kill the shocks, also I dont do very hard driving. Its just temporary anyways, till I can afford shocks, so Ill just drive it out with the new springs for as long as it lasts.

H&R are stiff springs and it will wear your shocks out because the shock isn't short (like sport shocks). You are only using the lower half of the shock, my buddy did it with his acura with high qualtiy springs and his shocks wer ****ed within a month. Just letting you know.

Terry, got my intrax springs off ebay for 100$ american.
