Does anyone have any sugestions in increasing the performance of an old 84 318?
(you can stop laughing now!)
I know I would be better of with a 6cyl instead of the 4cyl, but this car of mine has an extremely sentimental value for me (gonna drive till it decides to quit!).
Not looking for extream mods, just want to give it a bit more punch!

Start by getting an intake, and exhaust (some are cheap for the 318!). Mine had a triflo on it before, it was too damn loud... Not a lot you can really do without spending a lot of money. So just make it lighter you'll see a big difference when you take weight out of it. Take out whatever you dont need. if your Ac doesnt work take it out... if you dont want power steering take that out... It'll never be FAST but you can make it faster! *th-up*

I'll sell you my 318is motor 138,000 km's on it. it's an M42 with 135 hp, my car weighs 2600 lbs and with a 4.10 gear in the back i did 16.6 in the 1/4 mile. Not real fast but it's surprises me for a 4 banger.

Thanks, but my engine is solid and it only has 150k on it!

My M42 could smoke stock manual 325's off the line! Highway is a totally different story.
Turbocharging the M42 doesn't show great gains. You can squeez 220HP+ out of the M42 w/ the Eaton blower supplied by Downing Atlanta. 0-100 6.7 seconds. It runs at about 5-8psi and gives boost at 1000RPM.
Building an N/A motor tune for the M42 is expensive, the engine is very reliable though. Upgrade the valvetrain, bore it out to 2.0 or 2.1L, slap in some cams and you got yourself a pretty quick 4 banger.

MTRD we should go out for a coffee sometime and go over mods to the M42. I've hit a dead end and can't make up my mind on what i'm gonna do, engine conversion or build the M42. I would be happy if it put out around 180-200 hp but i don't wanna spend $7000 to get it there.
