Hey,

I know nothing about audio setups - NUTHIN! but I want to replace the stock speakers with something that's a bit more crisp - or defined.. I don't need super bass-kicking setups in the trunk (still need the space for crap)

I usually listen to everything between classical - to techno to metal...

I have a Alpine 9813 head unit.. now the million dollah question: What speakers and stuff should I be looking at?

compont speakers for the front for sure( woofer and tweeter) it really depends on what your willing to spend. you can run 2 or 3 way 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 on the back

the alpine type r's are good speakers but you should get the 5 1/4 inch component set. and for the rear the 5 1/4 inch coaxal alpine type r's speakers.

nice door setup. Are you glassing it in? or just doing a vinyl cover?

I just installed those for my front stage. I've never heard better components. *mw*

Might as well match it for the rears then too, just get Type R's as well, I have them all around..... amazing sound, great for the price. *th-up*

Wow.. awesome response. I was looking to keep it all Alpine too. I don't mind spending the cash if it's worth it. I played around with the Alpine website and it mentioned Type R 5 1/4s for the fronts and Type S for the rears.

Or is it pretty good for Type Rs all around?

Oh yeah, will I need to retrofit/custom mod anything for the door speakers to fit the 5 1/4s? I'm trying to keep things as stock looking as possible..

And the rears.. will 5 1/4s fit? I think the stock size is like 4"??

Well hey, if Alpine recommends that, then by all means give it a shot, I would just think that Type R's, being the bigger brother to the S's would sound a little better... but like you, I'm not the big audio knowitall, sorry, as far as fitment, I dunno the E36 sizes, I could tell ya the E30 sizes though! *th-up*

Anyone else? Should he be puttin the type S's in the rear instead?

And while we're at it.. should i upgrade the wiring too? Or does stock wiring suffice?

I did type R 5.25 compenent up front...easy direct fit....and type-r 6x9's in the back...AMAZING....it'll almost sound like you have a sub without takin up your trunk. Its a hard install...(fiberglass old holes, cut new ones in speaker shelf and steel, reupholster) If you want I could send pics and how I did it...trust me though its totally worth it

The tricky thing about stock wiring is that e36 have three ways up front and most speaker systems are only two ways. if you just plug them in it would sound off you need to use the cross over that comes with the compenent set. To do that you'll have to use an amp, the preout of your deck, and custom wiring

The rear speakers are listed at 4" because they are tiny two ways built into a removeable speaker box. If you pop off the speaker cover take out the two screws the whole black box comes out from the trunk. I don't know what bmw was thinking using these tiny speakers in the back but buying something that will fit in there will probably leave you disappointed. You just can't get powerful sound out of such tiny speakers

So you're saying that the best output would be to remove the 'box' at the rear - cut out holes for 6x9's?

And while we're at it.. do component speakers fit the same way the coaxials fit? What's the difference?!

MmmMmmm bibimbap....

Components sorta fit the same way in that the mid bass driver fits the same, but then u have to hide the crossover and figure out where to mount the separate tweeter,
putting them in a kick panel will give u best/good sound stage
if u have an apline deck, spend a lil and upgrade the wires, its allworth it
