Thinair mad a point that interested me.....

he said "with a few mods you can be faster then an M3 [on a 328is]"

now does anyone know what these few mods are? anyone have a 14.2 and less quarter mile 328is?

I would do the obvious,

Chip
Exchaust
Air filter
Lightened flywheel
clutchstop with short shifter
Pullies

Then you can always supercharge or turbocharge and then you will blow M3's away.

well the obvious is to force induce the car.

but N/A you could always start with the basic mods (mentioned a few posts above) then change the intake manifold, exhaust manifold , throttle body mod, you could also do some internal modifications to the engine, and lighten the car.

For the money your going to spend supercharging it I would buy an M3.

You may be able to make your car as quick as an M3 but you won't have the handling , braking, value etc. Just my 2 cents*th-up*

Lighter flywheel, pulleys and short shifter will not add horse power, it will make the throtle response much faster. Intake and chip will only add max 30 hp. The best and the cheapest way is to drop an S52 motor and leave the 328is badge.

These are the few mods that can make your car faster then an M3, and possibly squeak a 328 into very high 13's, without forced induction or spray.

This is the route I have chosen.

-M50 intake manifold (from a 91-95 525, 92-92 325 or 95 M3) (already install)
-96-99 M3 cams (or better) (being shipped)
-Software to run the above (already have)
-A 3.38LSD or better. My goal is to buy either a 3.38 from an auto M3, or a custom 3.46 diff. (no budget till next year). Running a 3.91 diff will also make you accelerate a lot faster, but you're gear limited at like 130mph or so at like 7000rpm.

Then your regular bolt-ons (Intake, exhaust, fan delete, ASC delete, etc, etc). I already have most of the bolt ons, I only really want a decent set of headers and a track pipe now.

well yea... i just want to see if its possible to have m3 power from the 80% m3 2.8 L M52 engine... withough forced induction...

how much do m3 cams raise the power by???

those aren't too expensive

Well, with a cam kit (cams, m50 manifold, and software), you're looking at about 200-210rwhp, which is what a stock M3 puts out. The only thing you will lack in is torque.

Be prepared to pay almost as much for labour to install the cams as you will for the cams themselves.

If you're really just interested in doind 1/4 mile runs, just save your cash and get nitrous.

wow nice...

but im pretty sure i can tackle a cam conversion myself..

if not ill get my cousin to guide me in installing one...(two actually)

and the software... is it the same as the dinan software download ... or AA or all the others?

AA is pretty good for the software, they're the ones who are doing mine (via Eurospeed chips). The Dinan software is pretty pricey. Also recommended is the Jim Conforti/Eurosport software. Eurosport actually has a full cam kit for sale (cams, intake manifold, intake manifold install kit, cold air intake, and software.)

The cam install isn't as easy as it may seem. BMW actually has a tool that is really helpful when swapping cams. The problem is if you try to remove the cams just by undoing each nut like a 1/4 turn at a time until the cams are off you risk snapping or bending the camshafts, they're pretty long, and I actually think they're hollow.

Then you have the variable timing (VANOS) to deal with, and getting the timing itself done.
