Nice job on the lights. H4 are a great mod. Also, I think the falt glass lights look better on e30's.

I love white 88+ cars!

Terry.. you can't "clean up" rust LOL j/k

I would detail it for you.. but i can't promiss it will run after.. that's the problem with shampooing engines

New headlights look good.. where are the other 2 though?

MikesJo
02-25-2004, 08:25 AM
The other 2 are air rams or something? I agree, H4's are sooo much better compared to the sealed. Sealed you see like nothing on the road. And when they go you have to replace the whole housing with another POS sealed beam. Try putting in Osram Silverstars in the H4's and whoa are they bright! I'm running on normal H4 bulbs and can tell you that you see even more with the silverstars (it's a bulb). I think my 2 Hella H4 housings cost me like $120 Canadian when I did it about a year ago.

I wanna know what kind of difference there is between the euro ellips and Hella H4's now, since the euro's look soooo nice :P.

Nice upgrade, the lighting difference is worth the money.

H4's rule. Don't go putting some gay blue bulbs in there now, Terry. :huh?:

I usually say the same thing too, but I like the sylvania silverstars, they don't look ricey but better then stock. I guess it is a preference

Nah, those are okay. I have a clone of those in my car, lows and fogs, and I love the all-white appearance. I just wish they didn't show that light blue tint in the reflections in the housing, I hate it! I think I may get some Osram Silverstars (NOT Sylvania) just to get rid of it.

Sent you a PM.

Yeah I know what you mean. I left my H4 bulbs, not going to bother with the silverstars. The h4 emit a much less yeloow light, really white because they are so bright. I never put my high beams on now.

now its time to do the fog mod, so that i can have high beams, and fogs at the same time...

On a side note, hopw can i make LEDS work? Can i attach a led to my side markers by running a straight wire, or i need morre than that?

Mystikal
02-25-2004, 06:36 PM
Terry, be careful with that mod. It's an incredible stress on your alternator when you have them all on.

If the LED's have resistors built in, then yeah, that's about it.

bmwm5lover
02-26-2004, 01:49 AM
jay, what do u mean by resistors? (im very bad in electrics)(is it like a relay?)

qimis
02-26-2004, 02:01 AM
mystikal: i just noticed on your sig, you only have the fogs on. how did you do that ?

BMW BMXer
02-26-2004, 02:20 AM
Reistors os the LED's dont go superbright then smell funny. They Resist the current flow.

If I had h4s I'd have blue bulbs probably. Im weird like that.

bmwm5lover
02-26-2004, 02:53 AM
i wanna shove a led or two inside the H4 and connect it to the sidemarkers, so it looks like they glow blue

Spencer
02-26-2004, 03:35 AM
Where can I buy sylvania silver stars for my H4's?

TIA

lvan
02-26-2004, 05:25 AM
Spencer ,where did you get those front clears indicators that are on your car? I just neer lances not all with housing. In your sign I can see how bright H4 are.

MikesJo
02-26-2004, 07:00 AM
You want the Osram Silverstars not the Sylvania ones. The osram output like 50% more light I think compared to the 30% the Sylavania does, plus I think Osram has the H4 bulb not Sylvania; Sylvania has the 9xxx type silverstars.

Modified a relay. Takes about 5 mins to do, and I love the look.

Heh, ghetto city light? I'll be impressed if you pull that off well, I know people who spend money on Euro ellips just for that feature.

This is true. Sylvania Silverstars are WAY overpriced for what they are, I sell clones for about 1/2 the price. Osram's however are quite bright.

Jay, i wanna try it, see how it looks. If i can pull it off, great, if i cant, then too bad....
Now i need to collect some info on the lectrics, etrc...

Ivan, I made my clears; they do the job. They are made out of the clear plastic used to cover fluorescent light fixtures.

Last year I got pulled over at a speed trap (wasn’t speeding :P). Anyway, two cops spent 15 minutes walking around my car ticketing me for anything and everything. The duo gave me $450 worth of tickets BUT they missed my clears with white bulbs so they must look pretty stock.

Total cost to make them was like $10.

This is the best pic of them I have

BTW none of those tickets held water*angel* *wiggle*

So, now I know that it's the Osram Silverstars that I'm looking for but where can I get them on the net? Must be a canadian site!
Are they legal?

TIA
Spencer

Mystikal
02-27-2004, 01:26 AM
No Canadian sites list the Osram's for sale, your best bet is www.suvlights.com. I'm trying to work on distributing them to you guys, I'll post news if I succeed.

Oh, and H4's by themselves aren't street legal. Word to the wise.

Spencer
02-27-2004, 05:39 AM
Why aren't H4's street legal? They aren't that bright?!

what do you have to go to ellips to be legal?

Mystikal
02-27-2004, 01:53 PM
I think any modification to a vehicles lighting system (i.e. not just bulbs) is illegal. Besides that, the Hella's say Off-Road Use Only right on the box.

NickP
02-27-2004, 05:41 PM
Actually any e code light is legal in Canada... they are legal in the states though.

well all the talk about the H4s what about the H1s? Oh and H4s can be gotten from hellas unfreindly to browse website or from bavarian autosport. anyone know if there were fog lights made for the '84 318 e30? lastly, man the pics...enough said.

off road use only can kiss my...as long as they're directional and help me to actually see the road at night. you all wouldn't believe how scary it is to drive at night with just only a flashlight worth of light. i've crossed lane and ran into things a few times. what about those LED lights and the HID lights now those need some off road use only warnings.

MikesJo
02-29-2004, 09:57 AM
Don't worry about the legal part. We have H4's in both our 318is's and here in vancouver cops are everywhere. Never gotten pulled over and that's going through road checks also.

Good choice going with the Hella H4 lights terry. My father bought a light conversion kit like that for his hummer, and the lights were so cheap that within 5 minutes of driving they both shattered from the stress on them :D
Later on we decided to get hellas and they've held up to the beating of the hummer ever since.

Just got my H4s in the mail. I want know how good they are until I have completed the removing and installation of my dash. Hopefully they're as good or even better than what you all have reported. Should I do H4s on all four, H4 outer + H1 inner or just the H4 outers?

Just the outer. I find my sealed high beams are plenty bright.

Making your own city lights is gay. Why do you think that the back side of the H4's have a rubber boot covering the openings? To keep moisture out. If you decide to "stick" some blue (rice?) bulbs in, you will no longer have that seal. No seal= moisture inside the headlight.

Just completed installation of my H4s they look great but kind of look wierd next to. Forexample, the H4s are on the out side and on the inside are the clouded and fadded glass sealed beams.

Now I need new O rings to go with the new lights and some headlamp shields. I was thinking Urethane shields from Bavarian Auto even though they're +/-$49.

I Haven't had the chance to see what they look like on the road but should be nice.

You all are correct it really does brighten up the front of the E30.

On question though, do you alls H4 lamps have wierd lettering on the lense or is mine the only one?

lvan
03-13-2004, 03:34 AM
just go to some scrap yard get get a ring the (O) and put it in a pocket...

BladeRunner
03-13-2004, 01:25 PM
That exactly what I was planning to do...not many BMW salvage/junkyards in my area  but yup that's what I was thinking. Also going to do the same with the one cracked sealed beam.

But what about the random lettering on the Hella H4 lense is that normal?

As I posted earlier I have installed my H4s.

They look great might I say, but I have one question.

How hot are they suppose to become when on the LOW light setting for more or less 1 minute?

Mine were on no more than a minute and I decide to place my hand infront of the beam to see it on my hand (nevermind me explaining this, its a thing I have with lights). When I did so about three inches from the lamp I could feel the heat being produced by the light. Is this normal or even safe, seems to hot to me?

One more thing I'm still running the 7.5 (default) fuses for all headlamps. I know I should be using 10 but just wanted to see what they looked like with 7.5 before buying the 10.
