View Full Version : Ball Joints

I went to do an alignment yesterday, and basically both of my ball joints are shot. Has anybody replaced them without the ball joint C press, just with the fork thingy?

Is it doable or I should just go and get the press?

Or should I just replace the whole controls arms?

I tried to replace mine without the proper tools and got no where, it was a bitch and got nothing accomplished. you can probablt borrow the tool from crappy tire, though I'm not positive.

if you cant get them done
my mechanic did my ball joints, tie rod ends, and allignment for $390

i dont know how good of a price that is, but i think it's pretty fair

if he just did the ball joints i'm sure it'd be a steal of a price

I could tell you where he is at

Thanks guys, I am going to see if I can do them myself first.

It looks like a pretty straight forward job as long as I can fabricate some kind of a "press" to get the ball joints out of the control arm.

I'll let you all know.

My mechanic removes the struts and brakes then he supports and heats up the control arms and hammers out the ball joint. Once that is done it is a matter of popping another one in and reconnecting everything.

How does he heat it up? with a torch?

Yeah. Gets it red hot and just whales on the ball joint. Sometimes it dosent come out in one piece. He is from Scotland and has been doing this for years so I would leave it up to the pros!
