Im looking at a 2002 ML430 or a 2001 X5 4.4..the ML430 cost almost the same as a 2001 X5(ML depreciated like there is no tomorrow)...Km wise both are below 45,000km..fully loaded..any comment regarding the ML430?..thanks

2001 is when Benz started getting their act together with the ML, thats the first year where it started to get reliable..... but at the same time, she may have the habbit of drinkin a little too much oil on ya. So don't be afraid to carry some extra with you wherever you go, as far as the X5 is concerned, I'm not too familiar with them, but the ML320 I would just stay away from myself....workin at a Benz dealer I get the benifit of hearing all the horror stories... a lot of customers have been quite upset with their ML's... but the 430's were a good strong engine, don't quite handle as good as the X5, thats what the ML500 is for, or if your really loaded, the ML55.

In conclusion, the ML430 you should be quite happy with, its the bigger engine, better tuned, and more reliable than the 320, (now the 350) so really its just up to you which one you like more. Good luck with whichever you choose.

the benz is too girly and small in my eyes, the X5 is more manly and sexy.....a sexy sary SUV!
my 2 cents

As much as I love BENZ I'd take the X5 in this case.

#1. More Reliable.
#2. Higher Resale Value.
#3. X5 Just Plain Out Looks Better.

Regular ML looks like a minivan

for the love of god, buy the X5, this is from someone that works at MB, remember that the ML is mostly domestic, only the engine & tranny is from europe, so basically you are buying a product made in the USA

How is 500 handles better than 430?
and wasnt the 500 replacement for 430?

also why are you talking about 320 when he never mentioned it?

I think all BMWs that are built in the U.S. are built in North Carolina or somewhere around there

IMO, there is no comparison.

Before my wife bought the X5, we extensilvely test drove, back to back the ML500 and the 4.4 X5.

We were really trying to give Merc a try, as we were somewhat unhappy with BMW's service, when we had the 330i and the M3.

The biggest difference between the two is the steering.
The ML's steering feels loose, and the truck feels no-were as tight as the X5.

I remember after driving the ML, we went straight to the BMW dealership and drove the X5. I remember my wife after turning into the street from the dealership, and she said 'BMW is BMW'.
I drove back and was suprised at the different feel between the two. Not to say Merc's is bad, but if you like a sporty feel to your car, then it's a simple choice. If you like a softer, more luxurious ride, you'll likely be happier with the Merc.

Go and drive them back to back. Best way to decide between the two. Good luck! *th-up*

OK listen to the master of ML i'd recomend you X5 seriously because it's better car overall i had ml 320 ml430 and now i have ml55, i only drove x5 4.6 tho but i think it's better car better build quality and better brakes and steering so dont even think about ml430 go with 4.4!!!Also there's almost no bodyroll in x5s but in MLs oh man oh man, even in ml55 there's alot of body roll wich pisses me off, if i could i'd trade it to 4.6 seriously!!!*th-up*

Go with the X5. It has better build quality than the ML's and better performance hands down. Also, the X5 is built in South Carolina and ML is built in Alabama

Or is it possible that the X5 is superior in many aspects, especially in regards to performance?

My aunt had a ML 320, not 430, but she had tons of problems with hers. But you know what's sad? She traded it in and bought another ML 320. I can't figure it out.

Maybe they gave her new one for free? or gave her a good deal!
I had ML320 and i didnt have any problems with it....only later after two years of raping the hell out of it it had some issues but by then we were selling it anyway...

from the X5 3.0?..considering the 2002 X5 3.0 since insurance wise its $600 cheaper on insurance plus its about $9000 cheaper in price compared to a 4.4...not going to haul anything huge but I drive alot.Im looking at the over all expenses..(gas,insurance,lifestyle,maintance)..is the 3.0L maybe a tad weak for this SUV or is a good truck with less power than its bigger sibling but has respectible pick up and towing capacity.I have a boat trailer and utility trailers I need to haul, nothing heavy...any opinions regarding the 3.0L?..thanks

Go with the X5,my bro used to have the 4.4i and it was a hell of a SUV and now my pops currently has the 3.0 X5 and he test drove both the ML320 and the 3.0 and he said it wasnt a hard decision.

I been reading some of the Mercedes chat rooms and damn there is alot of complaints with pre 2002 ML's...BMW X5 is top of list..Crazrvadim is the 3.0L gutsy enough to be respected serious SUV?..enough pulling power and enough "get up and go" for city and cottage country applications?...I tested drive a 2002 X5 4.4 and it was amazingly quick, does the 3.0L has that little kick for city/highway commutes?...

you can't buy new 430 since 2002, ML500 replaced them in 2003,and besides, they both have the same suspension

3.0 does have a decent kick, but nothing like a 4.4.My pops says its enough kick for him and it doesnt guzzle gas like the 4.4 does.If you have the money def. go for the 4.4,if not you wont be dissapointed with a 3.0.
