Thought itd be coo lfor people to share some stories.. basically whats the closest you've gotten to running out of gas?

For me, my light had been on for a day already, and i was about to get on a highway ramp, when at the last moment i heard a bit of a weird rumbling from the engine, im like shit i should fill up... luckily there was a gas station right across the street, so i pulled a u-ie.. about half way through i feel the throttle starting to die, and the engine is struggling bigtime... meanwhile im flooring it like crazy trying to get maybe 20 more metres out of it to the pump... luckily it caught a bit of gas i dunno from where and gave it that last push

now that i think about it, imagine i woulda gotten on the highway, lol... and it was one of those -30 days too..

I almost ran out of gas right by the gas station, I just made it, my car computer said I got 2km to go before empty, when I got to the gas station & filled up, the pump stoped right at 70L, & my tank is 70L including reserve

I was driving from Windsor to Toronto with my Camry. It was filled up in Toronto, drove down to Windsor, but there was more than 1/2 tank left, so we didn't fill up, and started driving back up.

Made it back with the computer saying there was 10kms left in the tank. Then right when we got off the highway, the computer read 0.

Ran outa gas on the highway. One of my most embarassing moments. The motorists honked at me when they saw me pouring gas into my car from a Jerry Can.

Haha , 2 years ago when i was driving from Quebec to Toronto to pick up my body kit From Eurostyle (Fil), I was driving my grand father minivan on the 401 when the tank got empty. He forgot to tell me his gaz gauge was off lol .

Luckily the van started after a few mins on the side of the 401 and there was an exit a couple hundred meters.

aaaaaah the good time

One time I was driving to Vancouver from Calgary, pass through some small town at around a quarter of a tank. Thought to myself, dont feel like stopping, I'll drive to the next town. Drive for about an hour or so, light comes on, no town in sight. Pass a toll through a toll booth, asked where the next gas station was, the lady said, "just up ahead, down the hill". So im feeling confident, its just down the hill right?
Pass through the toll, start down the hill, see a bunch of lights so Im pretty sure Im ok. Get to the lights. Its construction. No gas station. Keep going up another hill, a damn big one. So now the dial is pushing past the E, and Im at the top of a damn big hill. I decided to keep going, start just coasting down the hill, dont hit the throttle at all, just let gravity do the work. Ok so now im thinking for sure the gas station is right up ahead. Nope. Coast to the bottom of the hill again, and yet again, another hill. And as I have no gas and I want to get as far as possible there is NO braking allowed as I head down these hills. Roads are getting twisty and speeds are getting up 130-140. Shit. Creep up the hill again, tryin to keep the revs as low as possible to save gas, coast down the hill on the other side. No joke, this repeats for 20-30 minutes, hill after hill. Each time Im sure the gas will run out, in the middle of nowhere, nothing around at all.
Finally hit one last hill, coast into a gas station, and thank my lucky stars.
Funny thing was my girlfriend was on the passenger seat sleeping through the whole thing, wakes up when we stop and asks "why are we stopping?"

With my car, never. With my truck, a few times, twice on purpose to see how far I could go (I had gas with me). I've ran out of gas a few time pulling into gas stations, I usually make it within 50 ft of the pumps. My gas guage is off (and it seems to get worse with age) and my gas light doesn't come on when out of gas, although the light itself works.

Four years ago in Portugal I ran out of fuel with my cousin in my VW Polo at 2am in front of a gas station. The gas station was closed and I had to sleep there until 8am. I managed to kill the battery overnight with the radio and the 4-ways. So then we pushed the car to the local police station to get a boost from the cops. Appearently it takes a long time to get a diesel to start that ran dry. On the way home I found my parents driving around like crazy looking for us (I didn't have a cell in Portugal at the time).

i ran out of gas after a meet on the 401 west right before the exit for keele. I pulled over to the side, at 1:30 Am, swearing and cussing like no tommorrow. im sitting there trying to figure out what to do, and i decided to try to see if itll crank.. i did, and the damn thing started... Happy, i start going, 1st....2nd, and it just owuldnt go faster than 40 k;s no matter what.... so im driving, im using its momentum as much as i can, and the damn thing died, literraly 1 foot from the pump! i was soo lucky!

Ran out of gas in my shitbox E28. The gas gauge is ****ed. It never shows full. It seems proportional though. When I fill up, it shows about 90% full. So I figured the gauge was just turned in the dash. Cause when I'd fill up when the needle was past the red zone, all the way empty, there was like 10 liters left. So I'd just keep driving until it would go below empty. Never had a problem. Except for this one time. I'm driving down Steeles and get to Keele (going East). I go to pull away from the red and the car stumbles. Then it comes back to life and keeps going. Nothing surprises me with this car so I blew it off immediately. Then it starts getting worse. I'd pop it into neutral, rev the engine and it seemed to clear. Then I'd keep driving and it would come back and be even worse. It began to dawn on me that it was push-push time. I knew there was a gas station just up hill. I got to the IDF plaza and just past the street light when finally it just died. Now, some of you guys have met me and know that I am quite capable physically but pushing a 5 series uphill in rushhour traffic was a pain in the ****ing ass. Well, I made it. The only harm was some temporary ego damage.

Actually you were lucky it started. A diesel runs at very high fuel pressure so the pump needs a lot of cooling. It uses the fuel for this. So when diesels run out of fuel, I was told the fuel pump is history.

Damn:eek:

I've been driving around perfectly normal with like 30-40Kms left on the range display. Then when I went to fill up... 76 litres!!!!! I had 4L left in the tank. That has been my highest gas bill to date. 76L @ $0.81/litre... ouch.

Getting to the point where you car is jerking and starving for gas is very bad,why would you do such a thing to your car?? At empty your pumping dirt into your engine.I never go past a 1/4 tank.

I'll disagree with this, BMW's have nice large fuel filters for that. I'd be more afraid of damaging the pump by running it dry.

I had to remove the gas tank on my truck last year. While it was out I opened it and drained it. No sand/dirt came out, the bottom of the tank was clean. It's not like pump nozzles are all that dirty.
