View Full Version : Tire selection help

Greetings and Happy Holidays from Nova Scotia.
I tried searching but I haven't been able to find a final answer. How wide a tire can I put on a 7.0 inch wide wheel?
I currently have 225 45 zr17's, and I need to get two more in the spring. Should I go for wider in the rear? Can I go wider than this on this width of wheel?
Thanks for the assistance, and have a safe christmas.

225 is the max in most tire spec catalogs for a 7" rim. Even with that setup, you are missing a lot of sidewall strength that a 7.5 or 8" would have. I have read many testimonials about how much better the same tire feels after being put on a wider rim, and it was exactly the same situation. He had E46 non-SP wheels and mounted 225's, and they felt a little squirmy. He bought some OZ 17x8's, remounted the tires, and the car felt significantly better.
Do not go any wider.

Thanks for the advice Mystikal. Should i go slightly narrower for the fronts then? Or same size all around?
Also, can anyone recommend tire pressure? I know 32 is fairly standard, but for my 15's it recommends 28fr, 32Ba. I couldnt find any info on the 17's.

Keep it the same all around. No 3-series needs a staggered setup, they don't have nearly enough power. Stick with the 225's.
As for tire pressures, play around with it a little. BMW has the guidelines like any manufacturer, but those are way too low for spirited driving. Try something moderate like 36-38 all around and feel the difference. Don't go above values like 44 or so however, you'll get uneven wear.
