View Full Version : Blacked out the Chrome Grill

Sorry, it is kind of dark out........but I think it looks much better.......I am going to do the grills tommorrow that go around the headlights to make it look a bit newer......

Easy to do:

Tremclad Primer, 400 grit auto sandpaper, 2 coats of primer, 8 coats of Black Tremclad paint, 10 mins between coats.....

I only did three coats of black on the e36 and there are a few stone chips, so I figure 8 should hold up to more abuse.......

I love black grilles. 8 coats though? Shit, I used 1 and mine hasnt chipped in a year and a half.

I have a cottage up north with tons of gravel roads..........Thats where the chips came from on the e36........

ive done the rings around my headlights, and it looks great, but im not planning on doing my grill anytime soon...maybe if i see urs, i might change my mind

I was very hesitant because it is white with chrome on it, but it turned out quite nice......If you see it in person I think you will like it........Plus I have way more chrome on my e30 then yours, it will look nicer on your I think...

Looks really nice! I was going to paint mine as well, but then I saw some Hyperblack grills for sale on ebay for $60, so I picked up a pair of those :)

Terry, you should really try and paint your grills, it's not going to be as hard as the window surrounds you tried to black out before. The grills can be removed on the E30 I believe, so it's fairly simple to work with.

hehehe, yeah its my daily driver and project car too. I know its ugly and I dont care, I know she'll look hot when I'm done. I'm in the middle of getting her primed, but this weather we're having is slowing done the process big time. Once I'm done with it, I'll get a new daily driver and store this one.

I'm trying to get all this done by the summer so that I can head into Astoria Park not looking like SH!T. lolol, damn I havent cruised on that strip for years. Wow, time flies.

I would like to get the exterior and interior done by then and maybe next year get a new motor.

This is mine. A little dark tho..
Did you guys put clear coat? I plan to repaint it and clear coat mine this week

12-09-2003, 03:52 AM
No, I didn't do a clear coat, I don't want it to look glossy, just blend in.......
Looks good,

Terry the e30 front gril is so easy, 10 seconds honestly..........The e36 is a bit harder......

I think I'm alone in this but....

I blacked out the grills on my e36 as well.. and to be honest, I don't like it too much. My car is black to begin with.. and it seems to take away from the "BMW". It blends in almost too much. (I have e46 grills on my car)...

I'm experimenting with the idea of re-chroming the outer lip.. and putting bullethole mesh in the middle painted black... I've tried it all though. Chrome |||| inside, and black outer ring.. all chromed... all blacked out.. X-mesh in the middle... 97+ E36 grills... and E46 grills which I like best. (although you can see the fan behind the grill more, which is kinda ugly when you look dead-on.) My other idea has been to gunmetal chrome it.. so it's not so bling-bling.. but still obviously a BMW. I dunno... any ideas?

btw.. if I had an E30 I'd definately black it out... that's a whole other ball game... :D

I opted not to do the rings aroudn the lights cuz it makes them look smaller.
