View Full Version : BMW M3 vs M5

Me and my co-workers got into an argument over which would smoke which.

I says, the M5 is a big boat with more power than those who can afford it know what to do with. Top that off with sedan like handling and braking. It is simply not "tossible".

The M3 is a true enthusiast car, built from the ground up, not like a family executive car on steroids- as out of place as an Oldsmobile with a standard. It may have 2 less cylinders, but it will run circles around the M5- and eat less gas.

What does the bimmer community have to say about sibling rivalry???

M5 dominates all, the E46 is the only exception of the better M, but remember this, E34 was better than E36 M and E39 was the BEST CAR PERIOD till i believe 00 or 01, so ya M5 takes it all, however the M3 has a longer TRACK history, i THINK!!

All those people who keep screaming handling handling, should join some miata forums.. you'll find like minded folks who even though they got 80hp cars, think they drive the best cars int he world..

on the street - the m5 V8 is simply a ****ing monster rocket. with the exception of perhaps an SMG m3 coupe doing launch control start VS m5 with average driver...

the m5 will take the m3 in all other situations/from all other speeds.

the m5 and m3 are totally different cars and are meant to two different things. M3 is a sports car with two doors and is used for racing. M5 is a family sedan with tons of power for those that need the room of a full size car. If track racer is what your talking about the m3 wins but the m5 takes the straight line. For me I'd have to say I'd pick the m5 since I would want more torque plus the v8 sound soooo much better than the 6

Not exactly, since they're both //M cars means they were BOTH made in the MOTORSPORT division (hence the M:D ) so they're both basically track cars, just with different frames/structures, the M5 being a BIT more practical (to be able to seat 5 comfortably), and if you have seen the tests, the M5 has had a dominating track history ever since its joined!
can't argue there!
and ya the 8 just HAS to sound incredible compared to that TINY 6 cyl.!

First appearance of the E39 M5 was in 99 in Europe and then in 00 came to the NA. In 97 the E39 540 was deemed the replacement for the E34 M5 and was always looked upon as an unmarked M5 because of its capabilities.

But in my unbiased opinion (yeah right) I'd have to say M5. Both cars look awesome and are wicked fast but as one magazine put it so elequently ".. the M5 is a 911 turbo w/ 4 doors.. "

From what I heard, the owner of the black one pictured, just got through his 3000 mile break in period and is getting some updated software to get the specs to the claimed 600bhp level.

I also know there are 2 more RMS M5's in NY. 1 completed not too long ago and another one in process.

Still though very impressive to see the potential of that engine... 600hp....

no each e39 on ETC Cd has a different year.
So for europe E39 m5 starts from 97
for Us version it starts from 99.

it could be that production year for m5 was late 97 and was sold as 98 in europe.

Built in 97 (1) for Spring 98 Geneva Motor Show as an available model year 99.
Built in 98 (678) as Model Year 1999 for Europe
Built in 99 (5425) as Model Year 2000 for World..

So the first M5's were offered in Europe as MY 1999 just like I said. There were none offered as MY 1997, or MY 1998. They could have easily built the M5 for the car show in 1995, would you consider it available to the puiblic as a MY 1995/1996 car? I don't think so. M5's were offered in as 99 MY in Europe and as MY 00 in NA. No other model year earlier were ever offered.

I don't know about you but I'm reluctant to admit defeat immediately every time I come face to face with adversity. Call it the competitiveness in me but that's how I am.

I know there was never a 97 model released, because they first displayed it in Geneva during Spring 98, and were scheduled to release full details of the product later on in the year sometime in September. Aparently BMW designated all M5 bult in January 99 to Aug. 99 as 99 models, and those built in summer 98 to dec 98 were called 98's. If you notice the build/registration dates of all those 98's they range from 08/98 to 12/98. Normally when a car manufacturer builds a car in november of a given year the MY of that car is branded as the following year.

To say it started in 97 is like saying the E36 models started as 91 MY.
