not sure if it is the same but in my car it's in the different place but i always thought it was a temperature sensor for the a/c then again yours is not the automated a/c

at first i thought that was a mic and it was related to the MEMO button, so i figured you can record your own notes/messages on audio in the car!!
boy did i look stupid testin that out, but now i figured out what the MEMO did, but no clue on this thing!

microphone...when u sing in the car and it detects ur voice, it makes radio volume down so u can hear urself clearly....:D :D

in some cars, it turns into an B.O detector..when it goes off air freshener is released...you'll see, in sickfinga's car he constantly has to put new bottles of air freshener.

It was supposed to be a temp sensor on an e30. But people have takin it apart and found nothing. Apperently e30s just never got it,
