first, check if all vin's match..

check inside fenders, door jam, engine bay, and all frame parts for rust

check the vin # using car fax!!!

get a service record with the car if possible..if not, try to find a car with one.

make sure its original paint, or if its not..make sure it was done by someone reputable.

i think thats it for now..ill edit this if i got more info. good luck...pm charlie to check it with u as well...u gotta pay him, of course

In my opinion, a healthy engine is one that starts on the first try, and then settles down to a nice idle quickly, without making funny sounds.

It should not make any noises when turning

Brake should be a progressive feel to it, and easily modulatable.

Most important, you must take it on the highway and listen for anything.

If it's all satisfactory, then take it to a mechanic to get it checked out before handing over any money.

This is of course...depending on how much money you are willing to spend. If you only have like $500 (not saying you do), you cannot go around nit-picking about the car taking 2 times to start, or having a brake pedal that does 80% force with 1 cm travel and is hard as a rock...

if its an e30, also check the trunk for water damage..

that perticular car has been for sale since june 06 2003, wonder why is not selling. ask the dealer for the used car kit from ministry of transportation it will tell you how much that car is selling for. and make sure get the vin# to run it through the car fax. if it has been in an accident be4 or not.

People are right on the CarFax thing and checking it but i would take it one step further.

Get the car kit package from the MTO and find out every single owner the car has ever had. Next, Use http://canada411.ca and call up every single person who owned the car and ask lots of questions about it's history.

I got ****ed because i didnt do this. I checked the VIN on C/Fax and it came up clean. When i got some body work done to it recently the guy told me it had been banged up before, however, carfax never reported it because it was never reported and was paid for out of the guy's pocket (not by insurance).

Point of this is that if you want the TRUE history dont rely on C/Fax, call the ones who actually owned it.
