What would make a distributor cap split in three pieces. The cap is brand new, maybe 5 months old. The damn car sounds like a Ducatti when i rev'd it... Would running the car really hard cause that? I know I get up to about 5500 - 6000 rpms and I know thats not good for the motor but would that cause it to crack? Oh, I have an 84 E30 318I.

The distributer has a shaft that spins inside of it. Maybe if the shaft has some play, it might bang against something and break the distributer cap.
There are a lot of rings and bushings on the shaft (from what I remember) that can be replaced quite easily and inexpensively.
Replace those rings, and the cap, (should be less than $50), and try it out; or just replace the cap and hope that's all it was.

Thanx for your help. I just replaced the cap, I'll see if it happens again. Thanx again..
