get under the car, drop the muffler of the hanger and see how bad it is...if its all rusted outm you will have to replace it....if its just loose you can put a screw into it...

ok my rattling came from the same thing you guys thought but on some e30s i guess they were doing double walled exhaust pips so that the undercarage didn't get very hot what happened was the inner wall broke loose and rattles but only when i started off check it out.

that is also a very good point/idea....sometimes the stock muffler breaks up inside *th-up*

yeah double walled pipe is expensive too but seriously if it is this i would just redo the whole exhaust it is only a bit more. Get mandrel bend tubing from down pipe back is always a good idea i wish i would have done that instead of ordering a walker cat back pipe geesh.

That means you need new catalytic converters, but that's also a good point. Check the cats to see if they're causing the rattle. The most likely culprit still is the heat shield though.
One more place to look is if the hangers are banging against something. Mine were and caused an irritating rattle, so I just bent it away from the metal it was banging against.

I've been told by many shops that E36's *need* cats to perform properly. Also through some reading online, if you remove them, you might need oxygen sensor simulators ($$$)
It's just not worth it. Besides, the gains on a car without heavy mods are pretty low.

meh i am cutting the cat on my e30 the o2 sensor is like way up on the exhaust manifold so i don't htink i will have problems.
