View Full Version : HELP - Uneven Idle, Black Smoke...

So today while coming to a stop the car started to idle a little funny (low) and almost stalled. The engine was running a little hot, but nothing major up by the red (only to the next tick mark from center)

After stopping and checking when the idle gets funny there's a slight bit of black smoke and a slight whine coming from the engine bay.

Running on the highway and around town (and not idling) the car sounds perfect.

Any ideas?

If you heard a whining sound, it COULD be a belt slipping.
Was it that kind of sound?

I think I localized the whinning sound to my 2nd fuel pump (external). Sounds like it's toast. Could lack of fuel delivery be a problem?

Hmmmmmm, maybe a water pump? Vacuum lines? Idle control valve? And the belt perhaps?

Water pump was replaced about two years ago. All hoses and lines look good. ICV was replaced 3 months ago. I'll check them again though.

any misfire at high rpm?

Not that I can discern. I am getting great gas milge, and I can tell that the engine isn't running at 100% power...but for the most part higher RPMS are very smooth.
